Protected bicycle lanes coming to 4 areas in Alexandria

The initiative is part of Alexandria’s plan to foster a safe and accessible environment for walking and biking.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — This spring, the City of Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) will enhance bicycle lanes, transforming them into protected bike lanes. This will create physical barriers between the existing bicycle lanes and car lanes.

The following routes will have protected bike lanes:

  • North Van Dorn Street, between Braddock Road and Menokin Drive
  • North Pegram Street, between North Pickett Street and Polk Avenue
  • King Street, between Chinquapin Drive and Janney’s Lane
  • Seminary Road, between North Howard Street and North Quaker Lane

Studies show that protected bike lanes enhance safety by reducing the risk of collision for both cyclists and motorists. The initiative is part of Alexandria’s plan to foster a safe and accessible environment for walking and biking.

The city says these changes will not impact traffic operations, parking, or driveway access. Residents who live in these areas can continue to place their trash and recycling for weekly collection, just as before.
