Driver runs a red light, crashes into and kills 55-year-old, injures 11-year-old, according to Milwaukee police

Milwaukee police say a 31-year-old driver ran a red light on the city's northwest side Tuesday and collided with a 55-year-old driver, who ended up dying.

An 11-year-old child was inside the vehicle with the 55-year-old. The child was transported to a hospital and is expected to survive. The 55-year-old was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The collision, which happened on the 4300 block of West Villard Avenue at about 4 p.m., resulted in the vehicle driven by the 55-year-old flipping over and crashing into two other vehicles, including an Milwaukee Police Department marked squad, stopped at the red light, police said.

According to police, a vehicle traveling westbound on Villard Avenue ran a red light at the intersection with North Sherman Boulevard and crashed into a vehicle traveling southbound.

The driver of one of the vehicles stopped at a red light sustained no injuries, police said. Two officers were inside the marked squad. A 33-year-old officer sustained a nonfatal injury that did not require medical attention, police said. A 37-year-old officer was not injured.

Police arrested the 31-year-old driver and said charges are pending review by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.

As of Monday, seven people have died in crashes this year in Milwaukee, according to police.
