Gleyber Torres carries Yankees with solid day at plate

Noteworthy items from the Yankees’ Grapefruit League action on Monday:

Torrid Torres

Gleyber Torres was one of the few veterans to take the trip and made it worth it, going 2-for-3 with a double.

Spencer’s gift

Spencer Jones lined a single to left field in the fifth inning, but was promptly picked off first base with one out and Anthony Volpe at the plate.

Caught my eye

Coming off a Gold Glove rookie season at shortstop, Volpe had some ups and downs in the field Monday. He committed his second error of the spring in his sixth game, but also turned a slick double play. He charged to field a grounder, took a few steps to tag second base and then leapt over the slide of Tim Anderson to throw a strike to first.

Tuesday’s schedule

The Yankees will finish off their two-game East Coast swing by facing the Mets at 1:10 p.m. at Clover Park, where Clay Holmes will make his spring debut.
