Read the latest report here: O'Sullivan safely through to last 16

Around the tables: latest scores

  • Judd Trump 5-3 Fan Zhengyi
  • Mark Selby 5-2 Long Zehuang
  • Jackson Page 5-3 Wu Yize
  • Matthew Stevens 1-5 Elliot Slessor
  • He Guoqiang 3-2 Daniel Wells
  • Ronnie O'Sullivan 5-2 Lyu Haotian
  • Neil Robertson 5-2 Yuan Sijun
  • Ali Carter 1-5 Chris Wakelin

Result: Trump 5-3 Fan

A superb break of 108 from Judd. He is through to the last 16 as his title defence continues.

Trump 4-3 Fan (111-0)

A strong finish from Judd, who will be back to meet David Lilley in the last 16 on Thursday morning. Chasing a century to finish off.

Trump 4-3 Fan (46-0)

Judd presented with a second chance to get this match won here and now. Has been a tough old slog this for Judd, but looks like he is heading through. Which is the main thing. No difficult reds to negotiate.

Trump 4-3 Fan (26-0)

Fabulous long red by Judd. Powers in the object ball and is back out for the brown to follow. What a brave pot at this stage of the match. Every chance he could see out frame and match at this visit. But he loses position early on, and is forced to run safe off a red.

Around the tables: latest scores

  • Judd Trump 4-3 Fan Zhengyi
  • Mark Selby 4-2 Long Zehuang
  • Jackson Page 5-3 Wu Yize
  • Matthew Stevens 1-5 Elliot Slessor
  • He Guoqiang 3-1 Daniel Wells
  • Ronnie O'Sullivan 5-2 Lyu Haotian
  • Neil Robertson 4-2 Yuan Sijun
  • Ali Carter 1-5 Chris Wakelin

Trump 4-2 Fan (33-70)

Chances for Judd to put frame and match to bed, but he can't get the snooker he needs on the final three colours. Fan drills homes blue and pink. And on we go with Trump 4-3 ahead in the race to five.

Trump 4-2 Fan (33-59)

Trump misses a tricky cutback on the final red before Fan enjoys an outrageous fluke on the final red. In goes black and yellow to lead by 29 points with 25 remaining. Could be heading 4-3 here unless Judd can discover another snooker.

Trump 4-2 Fan (30-49)

Safety error by Fan enables Judd to slot penultimate red to left centre, but he is not ideally on final red. Just the safety shot to follow after potting black.

Trump 4-2 Fan (22-49)

Fan missing a tricky plant on reds, but he is not punished as Judd then misses a pink to left middle. Too much pace on the attempted pot. Down to the final two reds in this frame. Remember, Judd just needs one more frame to advance.

Trump 4-2 Fan (0-16)

Judd with runs of 52, 109, 51 and 80 today. Fan with 75 in the fourth frame. Some nice safety shots being exhibited by both men early in this seventh frame.

Trump 4-2 Fan (0-12)

Judd needing one more frame to secure his spot in the last 16 and a dust-up with former World Seniors champion David Lilley on Thursday morning.

Around the tables: latest scores

  • Judd Trump 4-2 Fan Zhengyi
  • Mark Selby 3-2 Long Zehuang
  • Jackson Page 3-2 Wu Yize
  • Matthew Stevens 1-5 Elliot Slessor
  • He Guoqiang 2-1 Daniel Wells
  • Ronnie O'Sullivan 5-2 Lyu Haotian
  • Neil Robertson 3-1 Yuan Sijun
  • Ali Carter 1-4 Chris Wakelin

Result: O'Sullivan 5-2 Lyu

O'Sullivan with breaks of 64, 99, 102 and 96. Not quite at his brilliant best, but more than good enough to continue his pursuit of the £170,000 first prize in Yushan on Sunday.

O'Sullivan 4-2 Lyu (88-0)

And O'Sullivan is heading through to the last 16 and a match against Hossein Vafaei on Thursday morning. Just a question of whether another century is on the table. But red stays out. A 96 break is more than good enough. Lyu offers the handshake amid plenty of cheering. And on goes the snooker GOAT.

O'Sullivan 4-2 Lyu (53-0)

O'Sullivan races over the 50-mark. This could be game, set and match right here. Doesn't look too much between him and the winning post. Lyu forced to digest that missed yellow.

O'Sullivan 4-2 Lyu (24-0)

Another bad, bad mistake by Lyu as he catches the blue off the break-off shot. Chance off a long red. In goes the red, and he lands perfectly on the black. This looks like a very promising chance to see out this frame and match here.

Around the tables: latest scores

  • Judd Trump 3-1 Fan Zhengyi
  • Mark Selby 3-2 Long Zehuang
  • Jackson Page 3-2 Wu Yize
  • Matthew Stevens 1-4 Elliot Slessor
  • He Guoqiang 2-1 Daniel Wells
  • Ronnie O'Sullivan 5-2 Lyu Haotian
  • Neil Robertson 3-1 Yuan Sijun
  • Ali Carter 1-4 Chris Wakelin

O'Sullivan 3-2 Lyu (66-41)

A closing break of 20 from O'Sullivan sees him steal the frame when it looked certain to be 3-3. Lyu with a fantastic pot on a red to green bag. In goes the black, but he then misses a straight yellow off the spot. Crowd can't believe that mistake. And Ronnie steps in to clear to the pink for a 4-2 advantage. How big a turning point is that going to be?

O'Sullivan 3-2 Lyu (11-41)

Ronnie goes for a red to left middle. Doesn't drop and suddenly the initiative is again handed to Lyu. Tries a cannon on reds using the blue, but doesn't land on one. Seven reds left on table. So plenty of balls left up for O'Sullivan to stage a recovery in the frame. Just the safety by Lyu after a run of 40. But O'Sullivan then picks out a lovely red to right middle. Back in business.

O'Sullivan 3-2 Lyu (4-1)

O'Sullivan 2-2 Lyu (102-0)

Will we see the first century of the day? Looks very much like it. Reds on side cushions providing little or no resistance on this table. And in goes the break for the ton. 51st century of the season. 102 as final red stays up. But a 3-2 lead for the seven-time world champion.

O'Sullivan 2-2 Lyu (54-0)

Ronnie responding to what feels like very generous conditions to score. The trend has been established. First to the punch tends to win the frame here. Looks like a 3-2 lead for O'Sullivan on the cards.

O'Sullivan 2-2 Lyu (47-0)

O'Sullivan picks out a brilliant double on a red to left centre pocket. And before you know it, he has the reds opened too. Very quick thinking by the snooker GOAT. And golden chance to get a frame won in double quick time too.

O'Sullivan 2-2 Lyu (0-0)

Boys back on the baize. Rocket Ronnie with knocks of 64 and 99, Lyu with 82 in the fourth. So all to play for here. Lyu tempted by a long red to a top pocket. Doesn't drop, but doesn't leave a red. First man with a decent chance tends to be winning frames in this contest. So O'Sullivan has to be wary. "A potential banana skin," for O'Sullivan is how Neal Foulds sees it in comms.

Around the tables: latest scores

  • Judd Trump 3-0 Fan Zhengyi
  • Mark Selby 3-0 Long Zehuang
  • Jackson Page 1-1 Wu Yize
  • Matthew Stevens 1-2 Elliot Slessor
  • He Guoqiang 1-1 Daniel Wells
  • Ronnie O'Sullivan 2-2 Lyu Haotian
  • Neil Robertson 2-0 Yuan Sijun
  • Ali Carter 0-3 Chris Wakelin

O'Sullivan 2-1 Lyu (0-82)

Black stays out on 82, but a very fine knock indeed. 82 gets the job done every day of the week. Remember, the winner will next face Hossein Vafaei in the round of 16 on Thursday. Players head for a cuppa at the mid-session break. Meanwhile, Mark Selby rolls home his second 136 of the day to lead Long Zehuang 3-0.

O'Sullivan 2-1 Lyu (0-57)

More reds are opened by Lyu via the black and he looks right in the ball park for a telling contribution as a mid-range disappears with little fuss. Hitting the ball very nicely indeed. Looks like 2-2 coming up.

O'Sullivan 2-1 Lyu (0-43)

Excellent long red is poked home by Lyu before he drops in a tricky brown. Wasn't easy, but in it goes and lands nicely on the next red. Glorious chance then for Lyu to respond for a second time in this match. Conditions look ripe for big breaks with pockets also appearing to be generous.

Around the tables: latest scores

  • Judd Trump 2-0 Fan Zhengyi
  • Mark Selby 2-0 Long Zehuang
  • Jackson Page 1-1 Wu Yize
  • Matthew Stevens 1-1 Elliot Slessor
  • He Guoqiang 1-0 Daniel Wells
  • Ronnie O'Sullivan 2-1 Lyu Haotian
  • Neil Robertson 2-0 Yuan Sijun
  • Ali Carter 0-2 Chris Wakelin

O'Sullivan 1-1 Lyu (99-6)

This is brilliant from O'Sullivan at close range. That white ball is firmly under lock and key. Looks like a century is on the cards in this frame. But he can't land on the final red. Goes for a top pocket with a tough red, but it hits the jaws. 99 of the best from the snooker GOAT, who leads 2-1 in the race to five.

O'Sullivan 1-1 Lyu (44-6)

A mixed bag so far from Ronnie as he is forced to cart home a brilliant recovery pot on a red to the yellow pocket. What a magical effort that is. The crowd loving every second of it. Back in prime position.

O'Sullivan 1-1 Lyu (4-6)

Almost an early blunder by the Rocket as he catches a red too thick. Gets cover on a blue to stop Lyu holing a red, but another safety error hands the young Chinese player a second chance. He can only make six as a red using red eludes him. A reprieve for Ronnie.

O'Sullivan 1-0 Lyu (0-74)

Four reds left up next to a side rail as a black stays up, but this frame is a done deal. O'Sullivan nods his head, and this match is all square at 1-1.

O'Sullivan 1-0 Lyu (0-51)

Super piece of cueing by Lyu to can a red to left middle from tight on top cush. And suddenly he has a second bite at cherry to level this match at 1-1. Wasn't a bad safety shot by Ronnie, but looks like he is going to be sitting out this second frame.

O'Sullivan 1-0 Lyu (0-26)

Fine recovery pot on a red by world No. 28 Lyu to keep break going after losing the white. But he is again out of position on 26 as cue ball sticks to a red. Just the safety shot to follow.

O'Sullivan 1-0 Lyu (0-11)

Well, this time Rocket Ronnie butchers a safety shot. Not sure if he was trying to screw the white back to baulk. But sticks his opponent right in among the balls as white stays at the business end of the table. Vital that he does similar to O'Sullivan at this visit.

O'Sullivan 0-0 Lyu (80-0)

Corking long red by O'Sullivan to put this frame to bed. Lyu has seen enough and it is a 1-0 lead for the world No. 1 in this last-32 contest. Mark Selby with a 136 break in the opening frame of his match against Long Zehuang.

O'Sullivan 0-0 Lyu (72-0)

This is a very smooth opening by O'Sullivan. Slowing down a bit to make sure of the balls, and it looks like this is going to be a quickfire kill straight off the bat. A run of 64 as a black then stays out off the spot when a century appeared likely. But Lyu needs two snookers. Should be a done deal here.

O'Sullivan 0-0 Lyu (30-0)

Safety error by the home player attempting to run the white safe back to baulk and this is a golden chance for O'Sullivan to get his scoring boots on right away. Looks like a golden chance to make a decent break upon first inspection.

O'Sullivan 0-0 Lyu (8-0)

O'Sullivan handed eight points straight off the bat with Lyu short of pace attempting to hit reds and yet to adjust to the pace of this showpiece table in Yushan. 1-1 each on the head-to-heads with Lyu beating Ronnie 5-1 in the last eight of the Wuhan Open earlier this season.

O'Sullivan 0-0 Lyu (4-0)

Off we go then for the first frame of the day. Lyu gets the match up and running, and is short with an escape on reds off two cushions before getting there the second time.

Rocket eyes record eighth world title at Crucible

World No. 1 Ronnie O'Sullivan admitted he has his sights set on a record eighth World Championship victory after opening his quest for a sixth major title of the campaign with a 5-3 win over Michael White in the last 64 of the World Open in Yushan on Tuesday afternoon. "I’d love to try to win the Crucible," he said. Watch and stream all the action live on Eurosport and discovery+.

Ding advances to last 16

Luca Brecel was in action on day three of the World Open, losing 5-1 to Stephen Maguire in the last 32. The world champion was out of sorts from the get-go and Maguire took advantage to progress to the last 16 in China. Elsewhere, Ding Junhui was in imperious form as he made three centuries in a 5-1 win over Cao Yupeng. Stream all the action from the World Open live on Eurosport and discovery+.

That's all for now

Until then, it's goodbye!

Brecel 1-5 Maguire

Maguire fouls and leaves Brecel a free ball. The Belgian pots two good pinks but jaws the red, leaving Maguire a chance and he nails it. He follows up with the black and Brecel wastes no time in offering the handshake. Maguire the deserved winner and will face either Robbie Williams or Barry Hawkins next.

Brecel 1-4 Maguire (27-58)

After being given a lifeline, Brecel is once again unable to take advantage and leaves Maguire a simple red. The Scotsman pots red and black but can't get a double on the final red to fall, which would have probably ended Brecel's resistance.

Brecel 1-4 Maguire (19-50)

The balls are all there, and the way Stephen's played, you don't expect him to miss. He's been terrific, inciting Luca to lose his discipline - not that hard, admittedly, but achievable only if you play great snook, which is actually really very hard. As I type, though, he drifts out of position having inadvertently cannoned the yellow playing his previous shot, and though he takes on a long red he doesn't get near it. Luca lives!

Brecel 1-4 Maguire (19-7)

Ding finishes Cao with a ton, securing a nilling, then Luca loses patience and smashes open the balls; nothing drops. Oh, Luca! Stephen should finish him here and now!

Brecel 1-4 Maguire (19-7)

Stephen drops a starter into right corner but soon runs out of position; this is very scrappy now.

Brecel 1-4 Maguire (19-1)

A missed from Stephen leaves Luca a chance and he rattles home a starter, but then following a blue there's that fabled carelessness again, the next ball missed to left corner. That's a massive oversight and we're back playing safety ... though not for long. First, Luca gets away with another error, a red rolling safe when it looked set to stay over the bag, then Stephen does because the world champ botches another ball he shouldn't, a black to the middle. Then, after a red, Stephen lands on nowt, Luca opens the pack with an attacking safety, and the tactic works: the Scot misses a starter by miles, goes in-off, and Luca drills home a beauty to get going. Huge visit, quiclly ended by a full-ball cannon into the yellow - he just can't get anything going.

Around the tables

Cao Yupeng 0-4 Ding Junhui
Dominic Dale 1-3 David Lilley
Ashley Hugill 2-2 Kyren Wilson
Robert Milkins 2-2 Hossein Vafaei
Joe Perry 0-3 Shaun Murphy
Ricky Walden 2-2 Ben Woollaston
Robbie Williams 0-2 Barry Hawkins

Brecel 1-4 Maguire

Luca leaves the last red, messes the table, and now he needs four on the spin to progress.

Brecel 1-3 Maguire (24-68)

But before he even gets to it, Luca needs a snooker and a pink makes it three, so it's a safety on the red with stephen so close to going one away.

Brecel 1-3 Maguire (24-41)

It's mad really, that Stephen sits at 31 in the world, but a deep run here could turn his season around, and he looks good for it - he's playing with such composure and there's no sense he's going to miss - though what will be his final red is on the side rail.

Brecel 1-3 Maguire (24-19)

Now it's Stephen running out of position, but unlike Luca he finds a telling safety, a foul follows, and now he's back at the table potting balls, breaking the pack when chipping a tight green to right-middle. A nasty cut-back, around the angle ... but he kisses the brown so remains in baulk, so in behind the yellow it is. Luca would definitely have taken that on to the centre, but Stephen, in control of the exchanges, makes a wise call to maintain that. And when Luca's escape leaves a sitter over right corner, 4-1 looks imminent.

Brecel 1-3 Maguire (24-6)

This is a must-win frame for Luca and he's quickly in, screwing into the pack off the black ... and landing on little. So he tries sending one long to the green but with safety in mind ... except he's left a red at the bottom of the cluster and a plant for good measure! Stephen opts for the latter while, in comms, Fergal gently chides him for not checking whether he'd left one. Crucial visit coming up.

We go again

Around the tables

Cao Yupeng 0-4 Ding Junhui
Dominic Dale 0-2 David Lilley
Ashley Hugill 1-2 Kyren Wilson
Robert Milkins 2-2 Hossein Vafaei
Joe Perry 0-3 Shaun Murphy
Ricky Walden 2-1 Ben Woollaston
Robbie Williams 0-2 Barry Hawkins

Brecel 1-3 Maguire

Yup, stephen does the necessary and Luca has a problem. See you in 15...

Brecel 1-2 Maguire (50-44)

There's been a calmness about Stephen today, and he needs brown, blue and pink - off their spots - for the frame.

Brecel 1-2 Maguire (50-19)

A frustrated Luca runs out of position, plays a dicey safety that leaves a starter, and this is now a massive frame - one which Stephen has a fine chance to steal. Can he navigate through the final three reds down the side of the table? So far so good....

Brecel 1-2 Maguire (43-13)

this has been a realy fun mini-sesh (of snooker), both players decent in the balls and attacking with bad intentions.

Brecel 1-2 Maguire (20-13)

Not for long. A poor positional shot leaves Luca a shot at one to left-centre, he flicks it in, sustains the run with a fine long red, and the way the balls are, this is a chance for 2-2 at the interval.

Brecel 1-2 Maguire (0-11)

Stephen cues nicely to sink a starter into right corner, a yellow brings him up the table ... and he soon runs out of position. No matter: Luca leaves him one to chip thin into right corner, he does, and he's away again.

Brecel 1-2 Maguire

Luca gets in early but can't get position onto a second red off the black and we wind up playing safety after a few pots each. Going nowhere, the boys tapping about, we end up re-racking.

Around the tables

Cao Yupeng 0-2 Ding Junhui
Dominic Dale 0-1 David Lilley
Ashley Hugill 0-1 Kyren Wilson
Robert Milkins 1-1 Hossein Vafaei
Joe Perry 0-2 Shaun Murphy
Ricky Walden 0-1 Ben Woollaston
Robbie Williams 0-1 Barry Hawkins

Brecel 1-2 Maguire

A lovely 77, and Luca's on the board.

Brecel 0-2 Maguire (56-5)

Luca's into this now, taking these beautifully. He's really good at taking each visit as it comes - his problem is carelessness, if he's playing someone able to punish. But for now, this is a terrific run and there's no reason to think it won't end with him drawing to within one.

Brecel 0-2 Maguire (17-5)

Ahahahaha, all that and Luca still finds a starter from black cush, lovely stuff into the green bag. He's quickly back p the tale off the yellow, and this is that chance Stephen thought he had a few minutes ago.

Brecel 0-2 Maguire (12-5)

Again, Stephen gets in off Luca's break - he really must sort that - this time stroking down a beauty to left corner. But the white seems to quicken up following a brown, rolling into the pack, so it's a safety when another sizable break looked likely; he foul-misses seeking thinnnest contact, then again, then again, before brushing his chosen red.

Around the tables

Cao Yupeng 0-2 Ding Junhui
Dominic Dale 0-1 David Lilley
Ashley Hugill 0-1 Kyren Wilson
Robert Milkins 0-1 Hossein Vafaei
Joe Perry 0-1 Shaun Murphy
Ricky Walden 0-1 Ben Woollaston
Robbie Williams 0-0 Barry Hawkins

Brecel 0-2 Maguire

Both men had chances to take that frame but it's Stephen who goes two in front, looking a little more consistent than the world champ.

Brecel 0-1 Maguire (48-73)

Stephen isn't perfect on the green and needs the rest to cut it into its own bag from almost directly above it ... but he dribbles it home off the jaw, spanks down a straight brown, and that is the frame! Luca will be feeling exceedingly poorly.

Brecel 0-1 Maguire (48-51)

Yup, he doesn't even leave it till last, BUT HAVE A LOOK! Luca sends a pink into the near jaw of right-middle - why? how? - so here comes Stephen to administer due punishment. This is going to be 2-0.

Brecel 0-1 Maguire (31-51)

Luca calmly removes balls, the only tricky one on black cush. But I'd expect him to nose in behind it and send it down.

Brecel 0-1 Maguire (8-51)

Oh, he goes to middle instead and undercuts! Immediate chance for Luca! The balls are there for him!

Brecel 0-1 Maguire (0-51)

A nice mid-distance red to left corner keeps Stephen at the table and Luca lost the first two frames yesterday, but then won five straight. I'm not sure he'll be allowed to do that here - his opponent is on one. His inspects a blue for a while, cracks it home, and breaks the pack ... his position not great but probably good enough: red long to yellow bag, and the frame should be his....

Brecel 0-1 Maguire (0-17)

Luca overcuts a long red by an aeon so stephen gets away with a slot to left corner and is imediately about the black spot. There are points out there for him, lots of them.

Around the tables

Cao Yupeng 0-0 Ding Junhui
Dominic Dale 0-0 David Lilley
Ashley Hugill 0-0 Kyren Wilson
Robert Milkins 0-0 Hossein Vafaei
Joe Perry 0-0 Shaun Murphy
Ricky Walden 0-0 Ben Woollaston
Robbie Williams 0-0 Barry Hawkins

Brecel 0-1 Maguire

He cannot, a run of 84 ending with a missed double. But what a start for the former wolrd number two.

Brecel 0-0 Maguire (0-79)

This is really very good work from Stephen, who's taken these without need for recovery flourishes. Can he convert to a ton?

Brecel 0-0 Maguire (0-54)

There's claret everywhere now, and Stephen should finish the frame at this visit now. He's a much better player than his record of the last two years says, so hoeflly he's now on the road back.

Brecel 0-0 Maguire (0-26)

If Luca plays as he did yesterday, he might be in trouble, because though there was plenty of brilliance there was also plenty of carelessness and Stephen is a much better player than Oliver Brown - who actually did alright, he just couldn't force home his opportuities. And, shonuff, Luca quickly makes an error with his break that cedes a chance, Stephen quickly accumulating and breaking the pack nicely.

And off we go!

For you today we have

Luca Brecel v Stephen Murphy will be our first match, after which we'll enjoy Ronnie O'Sullivan v Lyu Haotian.

Hello again

Elsewhere, world champion Luca Brecel was staring at defeat until he reeled off five consecutive frames to come from behind and beat Oliver Brown, while Judd Trump defeated Sanderson Lam 5-2.
