James Gunn has announced a title change to Superman: Legacy as filming has begun.

The writer-director of the Man of Steel's big-screen reboot celebrated Clark Kent's birthday on Thursday (February 29) by confirming his movie will just be called Superman.

Alongside a new look at Superman's costume on Instagram, Gunn wrote: "Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday.

"When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025."

Gunn shared the exciting news last summer that David Corenswet would play the Last Son of Krypton in Superman, alongside Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan as The Daily Planet's ace reporter Lois Lane.

Over the next several months, Gunn and his DC partner Peter Safran revealed several other major characters from the DC Universe would appear in the film.

Nicholas Hoult (Renfield) was cast as the Big Bad of the new DCU as Lex Luthor, alongside Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Gunn's close collaborator Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Corps member Guy Gardner and Sara Sampaio as Luthor's henchwoman Eve Teschmacher.

The cast gathered last week for the first time, with fans getting a new look at Hoult with Luthor's traditional bald head.

While many films have been delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes last year, Gunn previously confirmed Superman remains on schedule for its 2025 release.

He wrote on Instagram in November: "Thanks to the efforts of our talented crew, who never lost faith during the longest strikes in Hollywood history, and who never let their foot off the pedal, continuing to barrel forward, creating the most amazing character and set designs I've seen in my entire career, #SupermanLegacy will be making the originally planned release date of July 11, 2025."

Superman premieres in cinemas July 11, 2025.
