"We're Going to Look at Everything": Ryan Day Says Ohio State Staff Changes Not Out of the Question

The Ohio State Buckeyes posted their worst offensive performance since 2016 on Friday night when they lost 14-3 to the Missouri Tigers in the 2023 Goodyear Cotton Bowl.

The three points the Buckeyes scored against the Tigers were their fewest in a single game since their shutout loss to Clemson in the Sugar Bowl seven years ago, 31-0.

Plenty of criticism has been thrown Ohio State's way following the defeat, with most of it directed at the offensive line and special teams units. Buckeyes coach Ryan Day was asked after the game if he would consider making changes to his staff over the offseason, to which he responded that nothing was out of the question.

"We're going to look at everything," Day said. "Nobody cares that (we had) a freshman quarterback in there. You've got to go win the game. It didn't happen. Like I said before, everything will be looked at. If it's what helps Ohio State go reach our goals and win these games, then we'll make those changes."

Both offensive lines coach Justin Frye and special teams coordinator Parker Fleming have been called out on social media for the poor performance of their units. However, Day was clear that everyone would be assessed over Ohio State's time off of the field, coaches and otherwise.

Day's comments on doing whatever it takes to win next season felt similar to his message following Ohio State's defeat in the 2022 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl at the hands of Georgia, 42-41. The Buckeyes helmsman said he would step back from calling plays after the loss to the Bulldogs, but went right back to that role at the start of the 2023 campaign.

This year felt different, however, in that Day seemed genuinely irritated during his postgame availability. Perhaps another two-game losing streak to end the year is enough to motivate Day to mean what he says.
