GC Tennis: Tiger spring tennis team has big performances in Frisco Wakeland Invitational

Mar. 26—FRISCO — Corsicana's spring tennis team is having a strong season, and the boys and girls played exceptionally well Friday in the Frisco Wakeland Invitational.

"We had some amazing results at the Frisco Wakeland Invitational," CHS Tennis Coach Chad White said. "Kate Higgs won first-place in girls singles. John Higgs and Prez Rios made the finals and ended up getting second-place in boys doubles. Hannah White got fifth in girls singles and Avery Williams and Isaac Owen finished fifth in mixed doubles.

"Kate beat Malishka Patnaik (Frisco Emerson) 6-1, 6-0 to take the girls title against Patnaik, who upset the No, 2 seed from Frisco Independence and so we were expecting a really tough match," White said. "Kate lost the first game and made some errors to start. But then went on to dominate the rest of the match. She played amazing, and it was a great confidence builder for her, and will certainly help at the regional seating meeting."

The Tiger boys stepped up and played well in some close and competitive matches.

"John and Prez had to battle in every round they played," White said. "They played a very tough team in the first round, barely winning the first set and that match could've gone either way.

"Next, they played a team from Frisco Wakeland, and ended up going three sets, and we pulled out the victory and that one," he said. "Then they played the No. 1-seed and took them out as well. Then fell to a team from McKinney Boyd (Zach Henson/Kaydon Glenn) 7-6, 6-3.

Corsicana won impressive matches all over the courts in both boys and girls competition against some of Frisco's best.

"Hannah White won three out of four matches on Friday to get fifth place. She won her last round 4-1, 4-0 over a girl from Wakeland," White said. "Isaac and Avery also won 3-of-4 matches. They beat rom Wakeland in the fifth-place round 4-1, 4-2.

White said his tennis team went to Frisco to face tough competition to prepare the Tigers and Lady Tigers for the District Meet and the big postseason showdowns that will come later.

"We went to Frisco for great competition, and to give players an opportunity to have some breakthrough results and that is exactly what we got," White said. "I am so proud of the work that they are doing and we're getting better each month as we prepare for the district tournament at the end of April."
