What’s Right With Our Schools: Self Contained Class Prom at Central High

HARRISON, Tenn. (WDEF) – Prom Season is upon us! Late last week, the community came together to give students in self-contained classes an enchanted evening at Central High School. Feel free dance, as we take a well-dressed look at what’s right with our schools.

Katheron Latham is the Ruriteen Service Club Sponsor.

She explains, “This is an annual event hailed at central high school. It is a prom for our exceptional students. We have exceptional students here from Brainerd high school, from Soddy Daisy high school, we even have a homeschool family here. We want this to be open to just anyone who wanted to come so that they could have a community feeling and just enjoy this night. We want them to have a place where they feel comfortable, and they feel safe, and they could celebrate and have a good time with folks that are in their classes and enjoy that time together.”

“We have a DJ; we have food for them. And all of this is free to them. This is either donated by local vendors, or people have actually donated money to this cause, but each year our students, our room routine service club they plan everything. And they put it together here. And we have a great turnout tonight,” Latham continued.

Carolyn Thornton is a grandparent.

She says, “This is just awesome! I love it! You know, even though they have special needs, but we don’t need to overlook; don’t overlook kids with special needs. Embrace it. Because they, they are just as important as we are.”

Latham concluded, “So, we want them to feel that this is a place for them to be safe. We can help them with, if they need accommodations. Or if they need help with their wheelchair, or whatever special needs they need, we can assist them in at the event and we Plan for those things.  So, we want them to be comfortable. I want these students to remember that they have a great time and septic, they were joyful, and that this is a memory that they will always cherish of being together.”
