Officials: Small plane trying to land hits another plane at Orlando Sanford International Airport
The Seminole County Fire Department responded to the Orlando Sanford International Airport on Tuesday after an unoccupied plane was hit by a landing plane with three people onboard.
"I heard what sounded like a car crash," said Cody Herzog, who was sitting outside his office near the airport Tuesday night.
"It definitely caught me off guard for sure. I felt it on the ground," Herzog said.
According to officials with the Seminole County Fire Department, they and other agencies helped the airport's fire department.
The Orlando Sanford International Airport said two single-engine planes from a training facility were involved.
One of the small planes hit an unoccupied plane after it "landed short," the airport said.
Three people were on board the landing plane, one of whom was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
The runway was closed for hours so it could be inspected for safety.
"The runway should be open within an hour or two," Lauren Rowe, with the airport, said Tuesday night. "So that should not be a problem for any of our traveling public, and all of our commercial aircraft should take off in the morning as scheduled."
The airport says the NTSB and the FAA are investigating.
This incident comes just one day after Terminal B at Orlando International Airport (MCO) was shut down after an unclaimed baggage was deemed suspicious, creating chaos. MCO resumed operations after no threat was found.
