PROVIDENCE − A 14-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with murder, conspiracy and weapons violations in the Feb. 1 killing of an older teen, Providence police said Tuesday, adding that additional arrests are expected.

The youth, who was wanted on a warrant, had been held at the Rhode Island Training School.

He was brought into Family Court, Providence, on Tuesday afternoon and charged in the homicide of 17-year-old Emil Rodriguez.

Providence police Detective Maj. David Lapatin said he could not provide further detail on the teen's role in the homicide.

"We have other suspects," Lapatin said, "and we expect more arrests."

The shooting took place near Neutaconkanut Park.

Rodriguez's body was discovered around 9:30 p.m. near Legion Memorial Drive, police said at the time.

Police officers had been in the general area, and they were checking an alarm when they heard gunshots nearby, Providence's police chief, Col. Oscar Perez, said.

The officers found the young man's body in the street, he said.
