Police in North Providence said 60-year-old Joshua McCullough was charged with first-degree robbery and felony assault after allegedly stealing $12,665 from a 62-year-old woman at the Citizens Bank on Charles Street.

The victim was making a deposit for her employer in Providence when McCullough allegedly punched her in the chest, grabbed the deposit bag, and drove off, according to police.

The victim fought back, according to court documents obtained by Target 12, and knocked the suspect’s reading glasses off of his face, which police later recovered in the woman’s car. A police affidavit goes on to say that the woman ran after the suspect and followed him across the street to a nearby business, and McCullough tried to flee the scene.

Court records show that the victim attempted to open the suspect’s car door and get the money back. Police say McCullough reversed quickly, so the victim became stuck between the door and vehicle frame and was dragged a short distance before she was able to free herself.

Video of the alleged robbery was captured through surveillance cameras of a nearby business, according to court records. Police noted the suspect’s car had a distinctive American flag bumper sticker and “chrome after-market roof racks.”

Authorities said with the help of police in Providence and Flock cameras, they were able to find McCullough, and an arrest warrant was issued Wednesday. Police say members of the Warwick Police, R.I. State Police, and East Providence Police SWAT teams executed a search warrant on his home and vehicle on Thursday morning.

“Upon running Joshua’s information of photo was obtained from the ACI that shows Joshua wearing the same half-frame Armani Exchange reading glasses that were recovered from the robbery scene,” a police affidavit stated.

McCullough was arraigned in Kent County District Court Thursday morning and was ordered held without bail. No plea was entered, and the case was referred to a grand jury.

McCullough has a lengthy criminal history. Police confirmed the 60-year-old, formally named Terrell Muhammad, shot and killed Boston police officer Thomas Rose in 1993 while he was in police custody for suspected theft.

In that case, he was charged with murder and sentenced to 26-30 years in prison. Police say he served 15 years and was released in 2009.

McCullough was also previously arrested and charged with manslaughter for the shooting death of a Dorchester clerk in 1986. He served about six years for that crime.
