FROM MILES AWAY, A COLUMBIA GAS EMPLOYEE OUT ON THE JOB FELT THE BLAST AND DROVE STRAIGHT TO IT, KNOWING THAT THE GAS WOULD IMMEDIATELY NEED TO BE SHUT OFF. NO, THAT’S WHAT YOU KNOW. I’VE BEEN TRAINED TO DO THE MAJORITY OF MY LIFE, LARRY BERG, ACTING ON INSTINCT TUESDAY MORNING WHEN HE FELT THE IMPACT OF AN EXPLOSION FROM SEVERAL MILES AWAY IN CORAOPOLIS, THE SMOKE LEADING HIM TO THAT DEADLY SCENE ALONG RIVERVIEW ROAD IN CRESCENT TOWNSHIP. IT IS VERY DEVASTATING, BUT, UM, I DON’T KNOW, TRAINING AND, UH, KICKS IN AND JUST DO WHAT YOU GOT TO DO AND DO YOUR JOB. BERGE A COLUMBIA GAS EMPLOYEE OF 45 YEARS, KNOWS THIS AREA WELL, AND HE SAYS HE KNEW IMMEDIATELY WHEN HE ARRIVED TO THE SCENE. IT WAS THE HOME OF DAVID AND HELEN MITCHELL, WHO USED A PRIVATE WELL, IT’S BEEN YEARS AGO, BUT, YES, I DID MEET THEM BEFORE AND ACTUALLY HAD SPOKEN WITH HIM ABOUT HIS GAS. WELL, HE TOOK OFF RUNNING THROUGH THE DEBRIS AND INTO THE WOODS TO FIND THE WELL AND SHUT IT OFF TO AVOID ANY SECONDARY EXPLOSIONS OR FIRES POTENTIALLY SPARKED BY THE GAS. WELL, HE WENT STRAIGHT INTO THE AFTERMATH WHILE IT WAS STILL A THREAT. CRESCENT TOWNSHIP POLICE CHIEF FRANK MARKS THANKING BERG FOR HIS BRAVERY. THANK YOU. OBVIOUSLY THANK YOU. YOU KNOW, HE INSURED EVERYBODY’S SAFETY AND, UH, COMMENDABLE WHAT HE DID, ESPECIALLY AT THAT SCENE AT THAT TIME. BUT BERG SAYS HE WAS JUST DOING HIS JOB. I FOCUS ON MY JOB AND SAFETY AND, YOU KNOW, SAFETY OF THE COMMUNITY AND THE PEOPLE AROUND IT. SO. SO, UM, DIDN’T REALLY GIVE IT A WHOLE LOT OF THOUGHT. JUST WENT IN AND DID WHAT I THOUGHT NEEDED TO BE DONE. AND THE CAUSE OF THAT EXPLOSION REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION TONIGHT. CHIEF MARKS ALSO EXTENDING HIS GRATITUDE TO THE MANY LOCAL BUSINESSES THAT PROVIDED FOOD TO FEED FIRST RESPONDER
