GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) -A former Eastside high school student is teaching a tune or two to chorus students.

Carly Rubin is a master’s student at NYU Steinhart. Despite a few technical difficulties, Rubin spent her morning teaching voice techniques to chorus students.

It’s a part of the vocal pedagogy outreach program at NYU. The program provides workshops and master classes to students who attend schools in lower economic areas.

Rubin’s presentation was named ‘Building Your Belting Toolbox”. It was meant to give these students tools so they can ‘belt’ in a healthy way. Belting is a vocal technique that’s characterized by a big, powerful sound and is most commonly found in musical theatre, as well as rock and pop performers, according to BBC Maestro.

Eastside was coincidentally selected as her school to teach.

“I found theatre at Eastside, I found my love of singing at Eastside, and now teaching from the university, that was my dream school growing up in Gainesville. I always wanted to move to New York. It’s really full circle, it’s really heartwarming,” said Rubin

Rubin is graduating next year with her master’s in vocal performance and hopes to make a career on Broadway.
