EASTON, Mass. (WPRI) — A Stonehill College student studying abroad was seriously injured in a bicycle crash earlier this month.

David Rauseo told 12 News his daughter, Lauren Rauseo, was riding with friends while visiting Mallorca, Spain, when she lost control of her bicycle on a steep hill.

Lauren, who’s studying abroad in Paris, France, couldn’t stop and raced down the hill at an estimated 40 mph, according to her father.

“This is where the Tour de France riders come to train [because of] the hills,” David explained. “My daughter is not a Tour de France rider, and she went down this massive hill. She ran herself straight into a wall.”

Lauren was rushed to the hospital with a traumatic brain injury and punctured lung, as well as a broken hip, knee and collarbone. David said his daughter was put into a medically-induced coma so her body could properly heal.

“When me and her mom first got [to Spain]… the reports were not good,” David recalled. “We didn’t know if she was going to live.”

More than a week after the crash, Lauren is awake and doing “remarkably better,” according to her father. He believes she was “touched by the hand of God.”

“She’s a fighter, she always has been,” David said. “She’s able to communicate with us and she’s doing well … She’s literally talking about going back to Paris.”

Lauren still has a long road to recovery ahead of her, according to her father.

“She’s a miracle, and I mean that sincerely,” David said. “The people praying for her all over the world saved her life, there’s not a doubt in my mind.”

David said he’s overwhelmed by the support his family has received on Lauren’s behalf. A GoFundMe page created to offset her medical expenses has raised nearly $200,000.

“When I start thinking about the people around the country and around the world that are praying for her, it really touches my heart,” David said.

David remains hopeful that Lauren’s condition will continue to improve. If everything goes according to plan, David said his daughter will eventually be flown to Massachusetts General Hospital so she can continue her recovery closer to home.
