Elton John, Bernie Taupin honored with prestigious Gershwin Prize by Library of Congress

Songwriting duo Elton John and Bernie Taupin were awarded the prestigious Gershwin Prize for Popular Song by the Library of Congress on Wednesday evening.

To honor them, musicians performed their tunes at DAR Constitution Hall in D.C -- and each musician had a special connection to Elton John and Bernie Taupin.

Metallica’s song “Nothing Else Matters” features Elton John on piano. Charlie Puth is Elton’s neighbor and has gotten mentorship from him. Plus, the team wrote a song together during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maren Morris performed “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters” on the Restoration Album, with album art featuring Bernie Taupin’s original artwork.

Garth Brooks sang “Rocketman” at concerts. Billy Porter has sung “I’m Still Standing,” at the Elton John Oscars Party.

Annie Lennox and Elton opened a community center in South Africa in 2010 and sang “Daniel” together on stage. Lennox’s husband runs an Aids charity.

Jacob Lusk, a previous contestant on American Idol, also recently performed “Are You Ready For Love,” at Elton’s Oscar party which raised more than $10 million for the Elton John Aids Foundation and Brandi Carlile reportedly made an entire album with Elton John that has yet to be released.

John and Taupin have also been in the studio and recorded a new album. Fans are excited to learn more about when it will be released.
