HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — High Point cty leaders are hoping a traffic study could improve the flow of red lights across the city.

The High Point Metropolitan Planning Organization received $1.3 million In federal funds for the project.

“I take Uber everywhere … Some traffic lights continue to take longer than others,” said Justin Hicks, a rideshare user.

To some people, the traffic signals in High Point are too slow. To others, the lights are too fast.

“I think the traffic lights do move a little bit fast, and that may be contributing to some of the accidents at the intersection,” said Erin Carter, a driver.

This is what HPMPO and the High Point Department of Transportation want a closer look at.

It’s a chance to see how they can further improve the 232 traffic signals in the city, to mitigate congestion and improve air quality.

“We already do signal timing currently, but this is an evaluation trying to find … where we can improve what we’re currently doing,” High Point Transportation Director Greg Venable said.

Some heavily traveled corridors that will be evaluated include Eastchester Drive, North Main Street and South Main Street.

“They could definitely use more traffic lights out that way,” Carter said.

The study will cost the city about $300,000. They are currently working to identify a consulting firm for the study.

Once approved by the council, it will start in May.

“The overall goal is to make sure that people can move through the city in a safe and efficient manner,” Venable said.

High Point has two years to complete the project.

Some improvements could be made to traffic signals immediately, but major changes will not be made until the study is complete.
