The Ligonier Valley baseball team fell to Greensburg Central Catholic 15-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Centurions used big offensive outings in the third and fourth innings to put away the Rams and cruise to the win.
The contest started innocently enough as the Centurions took an early lead with a single run in the top of the first inning. A pair of singles and a walk scored the game’s first runner. The Rams’ defense was able to halt the scoring after the one run scored.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Rams got their first hit of the game as Duncan Foust recorded a single, but Greensburg Central Catholic escaped the inning without the Rams getting on the board.
Ligonier Valley returned the favor in the top of the second inning, allowing Greensburg Central Catholic to get on base with a leadoff double, but escaping the inning after Tyler Smith recorded three straight strikeouts on the mound.
The Rams had another chance to even things up in the bottom of the second as an error and a walk got Noah Knupp and Gavin Moore on base, but a groundout ended the inning before anything could come of the opportunity.
The Centurions took over in the top of the third, scoring eight runs off of a single, four doubles and five walks.
Ligonier Valley would get two of those runs back in the bottom half of the frame. Smith singled to lead off and Leo Bazala scored him with a single of his own later in the inning. Another single, this time by Jacob Petalino, advanced Bazala and an error by the Greensburg Central Catholic catcher scored Bazala from second.
The offense kept rolling for the Centurions in the top of the fourth with an error, three singles, a walk, and two home runs scored six more runs.
The Rams wouldn’t allow any more runs the rest of the way, but couldn’t match the high-flying Greensburg Central Catholic offense, and eventually fell 15-2.
The Rams recorded four hits in the loss, with Smith, Foust, Bazala and Petalino collecting knocks in the contest. Bazala’s hit recorded the lone RBI for the Rams in the game.
On the mound, Ligonier Valley used Smith, along with Zach Theys and Tyler Queer. Smith recorded five strikeouts in the loss while Queer collected one.
The Rams will get a little time to recuperate, with their next contest coming on April 2 on the road at Brentwood.
