What happened on the 202 freeway today? Here's what we know

The eastbound lanes of Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway at Priest Drive in Tempe were closed early Monday after a fatal crash.

The freeway reopened around 9:15 a.m. with all lanes open, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Phoenix firefighters were on scene of the collision and said early information indicated one person died and multiple patients suffered critical injuries, the department announced shortly before 3 a.m. on X. Officials did not release names of anyone involved in the crash.

The two-vehicle crash occurred at 2:06 a.m. Monday on the eastbound lanes of Red Mountain SR 202 between Center Parkway and Priest Road, according to DPS.

DPS said a Dodge Avenger struck a concrete median wall and stopped in the HOV lane. While there, the car was hit by a White Ford Escape.

The driver of the Avenger ended up in the roadway and was struck by multiple cars. DPS said the driver died from injuries sustained in the crash. DPS did not identify the driver.

The passengers of the Ford Escape were transported to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to DPS.
