CARBONDALE, Ill. — The City of Carbondale announced Wednesday the selection of a new fire chief.

Fire Chief Rob Miller will begin the role on Monday, April 15, after the current chief retires. His duties will include managing personnel at two fire stations; and managing emergency operations, rescue equipment and fire apparatus, and a training schedule.

He will also lead the development of a $4 million annual budget.

Miller began his public safety career as a police officer for the Village of Desoto, where he served for three years before moving to the Carbondale Fire Department in 1998. He has worked for the City of Carbondale for the past 25 years.

He became an arson investigator in 2006 and continued to investigate fires for 18 years. Miller was the president of firefighters union Local 1961 prior to his promotion to captain in 2018.

Miller was promoted in 2018 to assistant fire chief, where he managed 24-hour operations for one of the three shifts within the fire department. Miller has completed several certifications in his career, including certified law enforcement, fire apparatus engineer, juvenile officer, emergency medical responder, and fireground command officer school.
