Georgia baseball game 1 hero draws suspension for game 2 of doubleheader with Alabama

Kolby Branch delivered a walk-off game-winning blast Saturday for Georgia baseball to give the Bulldogs their first SEC win under new coach Wes Johnson in a Game 1 doubleheader win over Alabama.

The shortstop then had to sit out Game 2 against the Crimson Tide at Foley Field.

Branch was given a one-game suspension for what a team spokesman said was “unsportsmanlike conduct.” An SEC spokesman called it an ejection and said such an incident carries with it a one-game suspension for the first offense.

Branch’s grand slam home run in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Bulldogs to a 9-5 win over Alabama.

An exuberant Branch rounded the bases and then threw his helmet high in the air before being mobbed by his teammates as he crossed home plate.

The Baylor transfer hit his sixth home run of the season to move Georgia to 19-4 on the season, 1-3 in the SEC.

Branch had started every game this season at shortstop. Sebastian Murillo started in his place for Game 2 which Georgia also won 6-5.

Bulldogs star Charlie Condon hit three home runs on the day, including two in the second game. He has 17 home runs this season. Georgia clubbed seven home runs on the day.

Georgia and Alabama are scheduled to play Game 3 on Sunday at 1 p.m. on SEC Network+.
