PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A man convicted of voluntary manslaughter after fatally shooting another man in Portsmouth in 2022 has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Matthew Meek was sentenced to an active sentence of eight years with three years of supervised probation on release, Portsmouth Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office announced on Wednesday. The case was prosecuted by Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Joyce Weddle.

This comes after Meek was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter after a two-day trial back in November. He had previously pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of a firearm after felony conviction by nonviolent felon back in February 2024.

The commonwealth’s attorney’s office says evidence at the trial showed Meek fatally shot Ronnie Trewren on Dec. 5, 2022 on King Street in Portsmouth.

Meek fled to Elizabeth City after the shooting, and was arrested following a high-speed pursuit. He later admitted to law enforcement that he shot Trewren.
