Diane Von Furstenberg’s 200+ piece Target collaboration may not be debuting until March 23, but the legendary designer has already been using one of the tote bags from the collection for the past few months as her verified go-to, everything-fits bag. Bedecked in a geometric black and white vintage wave print from the label’s 1970s archives, it’s the rare sort of piece that defines the DVF aesthetic without the sticker shock of the mainline brand. “It's a miracle,” she says, while holding the aforementioned tote inside her New York headquarters during a Zoom meeting. “You can put so much in it.”

Presented as her largest brand collaboration to date, the designer didn’t merely stick to the familiar for the occasion, either. Along with wrap dresses, cargo pants, sweaters, outerwear, activewear, loungewear, and intimates, there will also be beauty, home decor and even made-to-order furniture that can be customized in one of seven exclusive Diane von Furstenberg for Target fabrics. Prices start at $4, with most of the clothing (women’s, girls’ and baby apparel, and accessories!) under $50. Of course, the Target version of the signature wrap dress will be included in the assortment too. After all, the brand is celebrating 50 years of that iconic style in 2024. So the story goes: In 1970, Von Furstenberg arrived in New York City with a dream and with a suitcase full of Italian-made printed jersey. In 1974, the wrap dress was born.

“This is a wrap dress that is as close to the brand as you can get,” she says, while examining one of Target’s versions. “It's a wrap dress without a collar in jersey and with long sleeves. And the price is ridiculous. $50.” Though it’s not nearly identical in terms of fabric, the look is almost the exact same: “You have a world of DVF in a very, very, very short limited time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the wrap dress right here.”

Von Furstenberg worked with her granddaughter, Talita Von Furstenberg, to develop the collection. “It's about celebrating creativity and colors and the lifestyle of happiness and cheerfulness,” she says. “Just things for your life that make you feel good.” Think: The made-to-order lip shape headboard or benches and room dividers that epitomize those bold and colorful prints the design legend has become so well-known for. There’s also nail polish and face masks; plates, tablecloths, comforters, and even lamp shades.

More on those prints, which are a definite highlight of the collection: For the occasion, Von Furstenberg dug deep into the archives to bring back some of her own personal favorites. There’s the animal poppy, for instance, a blast from the past of the 1970s. She holds up an apron with the print: “It feels like an animal print, but it's actually a poppy,” she says. “This one is one of the oldest prints, because I remember my mother had a dress with this on it.” Another memorable choice from the past is the 1970s ginko. “It’s a big print for the DVF brand, because I personally love the gingko,” she says.

While the collection will be available in most stores and online for a limited time starting March 23, super fans can explore and shop the collection early at a public event March 15-16 at The Shed in New York City’s Hudson Yards.

With a whirlwind of archive prints, both diehards and new-to-the-brand vintage lovers will likely snap up the wrap dresses quickly. “This year is all about celebrating the past,” she says. “And at the same time while we’re celebrating the past, we are incubating and preparing for the future.”
