A large fire has broken out near a football stadium in Southampton.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called to the blaze affecting three industrial units on Marine Parade, near St Mary’s Stadium, just after 1pm on Tuesday.

Up to 18 fire engines and other specialist vehicles and around 100 firefighters were at the scene by Tuesday evening, the service said.

It added there would likely be fire presence in the area “for a prolonged period of time”.

One person has been treated by paramedics at the scene, according to local reports.

People in the area have been advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the amount of smoke.

St Mary’s Stadium is home to Southampton Football Club, who announced their Championship match against Preston on Wednesday evening had been postponed due to the incident.

In a statement, the club said the fire had “caused significant disruption in the area with road closures around the stadium still in place as fire crews continue to deal with the situation”.
