MERIDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Police are actively investigating a fatal pedestrian crash Wednesday evening that shut down the Berlin Turnpike. The road has since reopened.

When officers arrived at the scene at 1939 North Broad Street, they found a man who had succumbed to his injuries.

He was later identified by Meriden Police as Luis Mulero, 53, with a last known address in Hartford.

A preliminary investigation showed Mulero was attempting to walk across the divided highway when he was struck by a yellow Chevy Silverado and then a Hyundai Tucson.

He sustained life-threatening injuries as a result of the incident and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police said the driver of the Chevy Silverado fled the scene and then came into the police department a few hours later. The driver of the Hyundai Tucson remained on the scene.

As part of the investigation, the Connecticut State Police blocked the entrance to Route 15 Northbound from I-691, while the Meriden Police closed off the entrance to the Berlin Turnpike at North Broad Street.

The road has since reopened.
