Glenroe's Emmet Bergin dies suddenly as EastEnders star brother shares heartbreaking post

Glenroe actor Emmet Bergin has died following a short stay in hospital, his famous brother Patrick Bergin has announced.

Actor Emmet Bergin, who starred in the RTE series Glenroe, has died, his brother Patrick Bergin has announced. The EastEnders star, who played villain Aidan Maguire, shared on Facebook: "Sharing the sad passing of our brother Emmet who was an inspiration and a great man.

"Love you Emmet. RIP."

Emmet was best known for his role as Dick Moran in the popular RTE soap, which he starred in from 1983 to 2001.

He also played Aengus Fanning in the film Veronica Guerin (2003), based on the life of the late journalist. Emmet's brother Patrick has also had roles in Sleeping with the Enemy (1991) alongside Julia Roberts and the lead in Robin Hood (1991).

The Irish Times reported that Mr Bergin died suddenly last Friday, March 15. He leaves behind his wife Sarah and their children Gavan and Tara.

In a statement to RTE, Emmet’s daughter Tara said: "Sadly, dad died on Friday morning at home. It was unexpected. He had only recently been alerted to a possible heart issue and had been discharged from a short stay in hospital.

"We thought and hoped he would be okay. We were all at home when it happened – my mum Sarah, my brother Gavan, and me. He was such an important presence in our lives. He will be greatly missed."

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, March 2,6 in the Victorian Chapel at Mount Jerome Crematorium in Harold's Cross, Dublin.

Emmet's family said: "Dearly beloved husband and best friend of Sarah and loving dad to Gavan and Tara.

"He will be very sadly missed by his wife, son, daughter, son-in-law Alan, his cherished grandson Jack, sister Siobhán, brothers Pat, Pearse and Allen, nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.

"Emmet will be reposing on Monday evening from 5pm to 7pm in Carnegies Funeral Home, Monkstown.

"A service to celebrate Emmet’s life will be held on Tuesday March 26 at 3.15pm in the Victorian Chapel, Mount Jerome Crematorium, Harold’s Cross."
