Plans are in the works to spruce up Staunton River State Park, and park personnel are seeking the public’s input. Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation Park Planner Bill Conkle wants to hear thoughts of Halifax County residents concerning the three-phase Staunton River State Park Master Plan. That plan, which includes future additions and renovations as funding becomes available, was presented Wednesday evening at the park’s Visitor’s Center.
The Feb. 2 Duke Energy coal ash spill in Eden, North Carolina, has cost the Halifax County Service Authority $12,722.15 so far. During the Thursday afternoon meeting of the Halifax County Service Authority Board of Directors, Executive Director Mark Estes updated directors on current activity related to the spill. Duke continues coal ash sediment assessments along the Dan River near Danville, Estes said, however high river flows following recent snow events have prevented river access because of unsafe conditions.

With hurlers Colby Grissom and Thomas Cole combining to hold Park View High School to three hits while fanning a total of 10 batters and the offense igniting for 13 hits, Halifax County High School cruised to a 13-2 win over the Dragons Friday night at Halifax County High School in the game stopped in the bottom of the sixth inning under the 10-run slaughter rule. “Our pitchers came out real well tonight,” remarked Comets catcher Tristan Howerton, who had two hits in the Comets’ victory.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge John C. Akard granted a motion filed by the owners of Berry Hill to extend the period to submit a reorganization plan until June 21. The motion was granted in the Greenbelt Division of Maryland Bankruptcy Court. Granting the motion means that the two owners of the property, Darrin Phillips and Ryan Hill, have three more months to complete a master plan and feasibility study and submit the reorganization plan.
Approximately 15 civic and community leaders gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony for a new 6,400-quare-foot corporate hangar — the first new building in 36 years — at William M. Tuck Airport. During the ceremony, airport commission chair Ronnie Vaughan said a viable airport is essential to economic development in the region. “In a time of high unemployment, it’s important that the leaders of this county put into place the infrastructure needed to bring new businesses to the county and provide jobs for our citizens,” he said.
Sophomore hurler Jeremy Jeffress put his Halifax County High School teammates on the right arm and carried them to victory. Jeffress fanned 15 batters including 10 of the first 11 hitters he faced and allowed only one hit and scattered three walks to lead the Comets to a 3-0 win over Martinsville.

The East Coast can be competitive with the West Coast when it comes to the production of fall broccoli and other produce and vegetables. That was the conclusion of the Southside Virginia Produce Corp. who, along with several VPI extension service specialists, have just returned from a “fact finding” tour of the broccoli and produce growing areas of Salinas Valley in California. Bobby Conner, president of the Southside Virginia Produce Coop and fellow coop members Wallace Wilson, Wayne McBride and Nelson Giles from Chatham joined with local extension agent Larry McPeters and a trio of extension service.
The number of farms in Halifax County have decreased from 1,750 in 1978 to 1,652 in 1982, according to preliminary reports from the Bureau of the Census. All land in farms totaled 256,344 acres in 1982, an average of 155 acres per farm. This is a 6,729 acre decrease from 1978, according to the figures.
The Halifax County Adult 18-and-Over Basketball League completed its first division lineup and its tournament format when the Hiiltoppers squeezed into the sixth spot in the league standings by the skin of their teeth — and a couple of free throws with just four seconds left in their game.
