Former Notre Dame Players on MLB Opening Day Rosters

Baseball seasons underway…

Happy Opening Day to each and every one of you and may your favorite team (as long as it’s not the St. Louis Cardinals) have a prosperous season to come.

As baseball opens at the Major League level today it’s time we take our annual look at former Notre Dame baseball stars who are on active MLB rosters.

This year former Fighting Irish hardballers total four players and one manager across the bigs. Here’s who to be a lookout for with their Notre Dame pasts in Major League Baseball this season.

Cavan Biggio – Toronto Blue Jays

If you’re new here then yes, he is the son of Hall of Famer, Craig.  Cavan Biggio is slated to start the year as the starting second baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Brandon Bielak – Houston Astros

Bielak has spent his entire career to date with the Houston Astros, debuting for them in 2020.

Joe Boyle – Oakland Athletics

Boyle was named to the Oakland Athletics starting rotation in the week leading up to opening day.  He’s set to be the fifth starter in Oakland’s rotation to begin the season.

Matt Vierling – Detroit Tigers

Vierling was traded from the Phillies to the Tigers last season and will begin the year as a utility player in Detroit.  The former Notre Dame standout figures to play all three outfield positions as well as some third base for the Tigers.

Craig Counsell - Manager - Chicago Cubs

After setting the franchise record for most wins by a manager with the Milwaukee Brewers, Counsell agreed to a significant pay increase to manage their division rival Chicago Cubs this season.
