Averett University professor confirmed dead after being reported missing in Florida

An Averett University professor has passed away after being reported missing from a conference in Florida.

In a state sent to ABC13 by the university, they said family members confirmed the passing of Dr. David Hanbury on Sunday afternoon.

According to the university, Hanbury was attending the Southeastern Psychological Association Conference there and was last seen on the evening of Friday, March 15.

The university has not shared any details about what caused his disappearance or his passing.

The university said Dr. Hanbury joined the Averett faculty more than eight years ago. He is an associate professor and co-chair of the Psychology Department and serves as the chair for the Division of Physical and Psychological Health Sciences.

On behalf of the entire Averett University community, we send our affection, condolences and prayers of support to Dr. Hanbury’s family, friends and all others upon whom he had a lasting impact," the university wrote in a statement.

Averetthas organized a time of prayer and support for the campus and surrounding community to attend. According to the university, it will be on March 18, at 6 p.m. on the Averett Student Center lawn at 351 Townes Street.
