Parents charged after infant dies from fentanyl, meth overdose

Prosecutors have authorized charges against the parents of a three-month-old girl who died from exposure to fentanyl and methamphetamine.

Police and paramedics went to a residence on Westgrove Way in Westdale on Feb. 2, 2022, for an unresponsive infant. She was taken to hospital and died a few days later.

The Winnipeg Police Service child abuse unit investigated, with autopsy and toxicology reports determining the cause of death. After a lengthy investigation and in consultation with Manitoba Prosecution Services, charges of fail to provide the necessities of life were authorized against the 39-year-old father and 40-year-old mother. 

They were arrested and charged on Tuesday. Both were detained in custody.
