Painters Street shooting

New Orleans police investigate a shooting that left 1 person dead and another in the hospital on the 2000 block of Painters Street in St. Roch on Wednesday, March 27, 2024.

One man was killed and another was injured after a shooting in St. Roch on Wednesday afternoon, New Orleans police said.

Police responded to the shooting in the 2000 block of Painters Street shortly after 1 p.m. One man with multiple gunshot wounds was pronounced dead on the scene. The second victim was taken by ambulance to a hospital, police said.

Danielle Brown identified the deceased victim as her son, Marlin Davis, 23, as she and other tearful family members congregated around her mobile sno-ball stand. She'd hurried her truck and trailer to the homicide scene when she heard the news.

Family members said the victim’s mother owns the snowball stand pictured here near Painters and North Johnson streets.

Brown and her son had gotten breakfast together on Wednesday morning at Mr. B's, she said.

"I brought him to his car after," Brown said. "Then they called and said, 'Marlin's dead.'"

New Orleans police have not described the circumstances leading up to the fatal shooting. Neighbors said they heard about seven to 10 shots ring out, and that the gunfire sounded like it came from the same small-caliber weapon.

"I thought it was a nail gun," said Robert Johnson, who has lived in the area since 2010.

Brown said her son was with his cousin and another person when a conflict broke out near a Painters Street driveway.

"They must have gotten into it," she said. "They say he got into a fight and the guy stood over him and shot him."

Davis' cousin was shot through the arm and would likely be discharged soon from the hospital, family members said Wednesday.

A New Orleans native, Davis attended McDonogh 35 Senior High School and was the middle of three brothers. He loved helping his mother run her sno-ball stand and posting the business on his social media pages.

"He was always smiling. He was a happy child," Brown said. "He loved his mama. He was proud of me."
