Curve now have own branded beer

Team partners with Levity Brewing Co.

Certain items exist that pair well together, such as peanut butter and jelly, fireworks and the Fourth of July, and beer and baseball.

For Altoona Curve fans and beer lovers, there are now two more options to choose from, the Curve and Levity Brewing Company announced Wednesday night.

“We’re just kind of beside ourselves that we get the opportunity to participate with the Curve,” Levity Brewing Company owner Luke McElvy said. “In this way, it’s really fun for us and it gives us a chance to be a part of something that’s so huge for Altoona and is such an icon in this whole area.”

Altoona is far from the only team to have their own branded beer, even in the Eastern League.

“There are a lot of minor league teams around the country that have their own branded beer in our league, specifically Richmond and Hartford,” Curve general manager Nate Bowen said.

The idea to bring the new selections to Peoples Natural Gas Field was born at a Chamber of Commerce event but had been tossed around by McElvy and Levity for the past few years.

“We had been thinking about it for a couple years,” McElvy said. “Wouldn’t it be cool if we could have a beer or have our beer in the stadium for those beautiful summer baseball games?”

From there, it was time to pick selections and ultimately the winning options.

“We sat down with all the Curve people, and we just drank a bunch of beer. And then at the end of that, magically, we had two really good ideas,” McElvey said. “One was a clean, crisp, light, easy drinking lime flavored Kolsch and the other one was something for maybe the craft beer lover or somebody who loves IPAs.”

Next came the design of the labels and naming the beers to fit both the Curve’s brand and Levity’s.

“Fortunately, we have a design team at the curve that did a lot of the heavy lifting and making the designs of the cans to make it appear fun and still fit our brand and their brand and tie it all together into one,” Bowen said.

The names of the two beers are Baseball Skies, a Kolsch style ale with a hint of lime, and Play the Song, an ode to Everybody Loves Curve Baseball, which is a pale ale that features juicy citrus, mango and pineapple flavors together.

Fans will have a multitude of opportunities to get their hands on the beers year round.

“It’ll be available in cans at the ballpark and we’ll have it on all the time here at Levity Brewing, both on draft and in cans, and at our Indiana location as well,” McElvy said. “There’s a great connection between if people want to come to the restaurant bar beforehand and try the beers here or they tried at the stadium and they want to come back here afterwards.”

Baseball Skies and Play the Song will both be available for Altoona’s home opener on April 9.
