Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome released a statement after the shooting.

“On a day in which we saw a young child seriously wounded here in our city, I am deeply mindful of the irreversible impact that violent acts have on our precious children through no fault of their own. My staff continues working at this hour to assist those personally affected by today’s shooting, even as our dedicated Baton Rouge police officers are increasing their visible presence around this city as they work to take those intent on committing these criminal acts off the street. We are not going to stop in our efforts to halt these acts, and you have my word that together, we will marshal every resource available to support our police in this ongoing effort.”

As Baton Rouge Police continue their search for those responsible for shooting and killing a man and injuring a one-year-old on Tuesday afternoon. City leaders are speaking out and increasing resources to fight crime.

“Think about what makes an individual have a hard heart, a hardened heart, be so concerned about perhaps vengeance or retaliation that they would risk a child’s life in the process,” said Broome.

To increase patrol in hotspot areas, Broome approved an overtime budget of nearly $35,000 for 10 officers.

The investigation remains ongoing.
