PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The reward for information leading to an arrest involving a dog who died after being set on fire in Phoenix in early March has reached a total of $10,000.

The PETA organization, known for its fierce advocacy of animal rights, announced Tuesday that it is offering up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Other efforts offering a reward are Silent Witness offering up to $1,000 and the dog’s owners and neighbors offering $4,000.

The attack happened March 5 at the dog’s home near 27th Avenue and Van Buren Street. Duke, a 16-year-old pit bull/mastiff mix, was sleeping peacefully on a mattress in his backyard when he was burned. He reportedly suffered severe injuries and had to be put down.

“Somebody tortured him. He was just trying to live out his last days,” said Stella McPhee, Duke’s owner.

“Hopefully we’ll get to the bottom of it and Duke will get his justice because he darn sure deserves it,” she said.
