Trump trial security costs skyrocket; Fort Pierce police working with lawmakers to make changes
HOME PAGE. THE CITY OF FORT PIERCE IS ASKING FOR HELP IN PAYING FOR EXTRA SECURITY. DURING FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP’S TRIAL AS TREASURE COAST BUREAU REPORTER JOSSIE CARBONARE SHARES, LOCAL OFFICIALS ARE NOW LOOKING TO REPRESENTATIVE BRIAN MAST FOR ANSWERS. THE AMOUNT OF EXTRA LAW ENFORCEMENT NEEDED FOR THE TRIAL AGAINST FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP IN FORT PIERCE IS PUSHING LOCAL OFFICIALS TO PROPOSE MAKING A CHANGE. CAN WE CREATE SOMETHING LEGISLATIVELY THAT GIVES FUNDING FOR FOR THIS TRIAL UNDER WHATEVER TITLE IT COULD BE TITLED? UH, SIMILAR TO THE WAY THE PALM BEACH AREA LAW ENFORCEMENT HAS HAD IN EVERYTHING ASSOCIATED WITH HIS HOME BEING THERE. CURRENTLY, THERE’S NO FEDERAL FUNDING OR LAW IN PLACE TO ASSIST WITH THOSE COSTS. THE FORT PIERCE POLICE DEPARTMENT SAYS THEY’VE BEEN WORKING WITH A LONG LIST OF LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL AGENCIES AND HAVE BEEN SPEARHEADING THE PROPOSAL. WE HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO OUR CITIZENS AND GUESTS IN OUR CITY, SO WE NEED TO PROVIDE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR THEM. SO AND TO ALSO MINIMIZE THE IMPACT TO OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES WITH THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE THAT ARE GOING TO SHOW UP FOR THE TRIAL. SINCE THE SUMMER OF 2023, THE DEPARTMENT HAS SPENT. ROUGHLY $300,000 IN EMERGENCY FUNDS IN TRAINING, EQUIPMENT AND SALARY TO SUPPLY SECURITY FOR TRUMP’S HEARINGS. CONGRESSMAN BRIAN MAST SAYS HE’S LOOKING AT DIFFERENT POSSIBILITIES TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE, BUT EXPLAINS THERE ARE STEPS THAT HAVE TO HAPPEN FIRST, IS THERE SOMETHING THAT THEY MISSED? IS THERE ALREADY A GRANT OUT THERE WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE THAT THEY COULD FALL UNDER? THEY JUST DIDN’T REALIZE THIS. THE NEXT WAY TO LOOK AT IT IS TO SAY, OKAY, THERE ARE PROGRAMS OUT THERE TO AS ASSIST WITH PRESIDENTIAL VISITS UNDER OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES, CAN THAT SIMPLY BE AMENDED TO ADD LANGUAGE THAT SAYS ALSO FOR A, YOU KNOW, A TRIAL THAT IS TAKING PLACE, UH, FOR A FORMER PRESIDENT IN POLICY, IN LEGISLATION, THOSE THINGS DON’T HAPPEN OVERNIGHT. IT HAS TO GO THROUGH SOMETHING, HAS TO GO THROUGH THE HOUSE, GO THROUGH THE SENATE, GO ACROSS THE PRESIDENT’S DESK. TO BE CLEAR, THERE’S NO GUARANTEE THIS WOULD GO FORWARD. AND IF IT DID, IT COULD TAKE MONTHS. REPORTING FROM FORT PIERCE. I’M JOSSIE CARBO
