The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes star Rachel Zegler has addressed the possibility of returning as Lucy Gray Baird in the future.

The actress played the character in last year's Hunger Games prequel, with her fate left ambiguous after appearing to be hit by Coriolanus Snow – though she subsequently appeared to have escaped.

Asked by Deadline about whether her character could come back in a potential sequel, Zegler responded: "Oh, I don't know."

When it was suggested that Lucy Gray is not really dead, the actress referenced Olivia Rodrigo's Hunger Games song 'Can't Catch Me Now'.

"It's not up to me but as Olivia Rodrigo said, 'She's in the trees, she's in the breeze,'" she said. "So I don't actually know what's going to happen. I for one like to believe she's alive."

Zegler added that she "really hopes" that a second movie happens.

The star previously opened up about her character's open-ended fate, telling Collider: "I can feel that she got away.

"She's so much more clever than anybody gives her credit for because it's just one of those stories where Coriolanus thinks that he's ahead of the game, and in reality, he's 12 steps behind her."

Zegler added that she likes to think of her character "like the bird ... in the poem that she sings, that she flies away and that she gets to be free the way she wanted to be, that she really did run like the others were planning to do".

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is available to buy or rent in the UK from Prime Video, iTunes, Microsoft Store and more.
