A surplus of £1.5m in the Thames Valley Police Authority budget will be put into reserves, rather than being used to lower council tax.

The excess has occurred because the levy the authority pays each year to help fund the National Crime Squad and the National Criminal Intelligence Service was less than expected.

Members of the authority's strategy, finance and planning committee yesterday (January 24) voted to save the money for future projects.

Members rejected the alternative of using the windfall to reduce the police authority's share of the council tax bill, after being told it would only result in a £2 average yearly saving per household.
