The shooting happened after the two were involved in a minor collision on nearby Carlton Blvd.

Medics rushed the man with the machete to Staten Island University North, where he was listed in critical condition.

No charges were immediately filed.

The shooter is a former NYPD officer who left the department before he was able to retire, a police source said. It was not immediately clear if he was working for another law enforcement agency when the shooting occurred.
