On Friday, March 8, Greensky Bluegrass delivered the second-to-last performance on their Winter Tour 2024. Night one of two on the Ryman Auditorium stage in Nashville, Tenn., started with an opening frame from Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country, which preluded the headliner’s two-set delivery. During the main frames, Greensky welcomed assistance from Donato, bluegrass troubadour Sam Bush, and genre darling Billy Strings.

Before their guests arrived, Greensky Bluegrass started their Ryman stand with the Carter Stanley-penned “How Mountain Girls Can Love,” which preluded the first note of original material, which took complete form as “Past My Prime.” Sticking with their own standards, Greensky welcomed Donato to the stage to add riffs on “Murder of Crows.”

After the initial guest left the stage, the band paired “Reasons to Stay” with “Exuberance,” a song borrowed from the psychedelic roots-rock collective Airborne or Aquatic?, which represented a bust out, last played on Oct. 10, 2022, at San Francisco’s Warfield Theater. Another series of songs brought the band into the night’s set break.

Upon their return to the Mother Church stage, music resumed on “Do it Alone.” Next, they added “Living Order” and “Cold Feet” before picking up “A Letter to Seymour” and the final song sans guests, “In Control.” Bush turned up next, with his fiddle ready for “Worry For You” and ensuing cut, “All Four.” With their guest still present, the band debuted a cover of John Hartford’s “Granny Wontcha Smoke Some Marijuana.”

For the final song of the second set, Greensky Bluegrass welcomed Nashville resident Billy Strings to the storied stage. The billed musicians and their guest worked through “Courage for the Road,” only to return for their encore, with Strings still present, as well as Bush and Donato in tow, for a collaborative close-out on debut, “My Love Will Not Change,” a song conceived by Del McCoury Band.
