California’s 2024 primary election results in near-lowest voter turnout in state history

(FOX40.COM) — The 2024 primary election in California on March 5 resulted in the near-lowest voter turnout in the state’s history.

Officials said there are 22 million registered voters in California, however, only 33-35% voted in the 2024 primary election.

“Presidential primaries are generally closer to 50% turnout,” said Paul Mitchell, Vice President of Political Data Inc., a voter Information and ballot tracking service. “But they also vary greatly depending on whether or not there are competitive races.”

Mitchell attributed this year’s low voter turnout to a lack of competition on the ballots but said that’s expected to change for November’s general election when voters decide between Donald Trump and Joe Biden as president of the United States.

“In November it will be an election where voters probably think to themselves – this might be the most important election of my lifetime,” Mitchell said. “They are going to be jumping out of bed and get us to a very, very high turnout.”
