FA Cup quarter-final: Man City beat Newcastle to reach Wembley

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to BBC Match of the Day: "It sounds really good. I know we play to win the finals, but to win it, you have to win the earlier rounds. We won four Carabao Cup finals in a row and now we're in six FA Cup semi-finals in a row. To run and play the way they did is incredible, congratulations to the team, no one has done that before.

"We played really well, we were so sfae with the ball. Mateo, Rodri and Bernardo kept the ball so well. The game was really good.

"You see us when we come back every three days, three days, three days, three days, we need Kevin, Jack and Erling to come back in the best possible conditions."

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “We tried our very best to force them into mistakes, but they didn’t. They were very good. Conceding the two goals that we did didn’t help our cause.

“It was an uphill battle. We covered a lot of ground, but when we had our moments our last pass was lacking.

“The difference is their technical quality and their players who can get out of tight situations – it’s at the highest level. We’re trying to get to their level.

“We’ve got 10 massive games left and are only a few points below seventh place [in the Premier League], so we’re looking to end the season on a high.”

Bernardo Silva’s brace took him to 10 goals for the season in all competitions, the third time he’s reached double figures in a single campaign with Manchester City (13 in both 2018-19 and 2021-22).

Manchester midfielder Phil Foden, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “I thought we controlled the game really well. We had a lot of the ball and tried to find the right moment to attack, and I think we did that really well.

“We were always talking about [winning more trophies]. The hunger’s still there. We’ll keep going.

“It’s one of the best squads I’ve ever seen. At this stage of the season we’re going to need everyone.”

On his own form: “I’m really happy with it. I’m jut playing with a smile on my face and hopefully I’ll continue to do that.”

Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku speaking to BBC One: "It felt good, I'm happy with the performance of my team, the performance of myself. I feel like I'm getting better and better. We scored important goals, we defended well, attacked well, very happy.

"We were in control but you never know with the counter attacks, they have some fast players and they want to run in behind. The [defenders] did well today."

Newcastle had just two shots in this match, their fewest in a single game in all competitions since November 2015 (also two v Bournemouth).

This season has been tough for Newcastle, but there have been mitigating circumstances. the injuries, especially to Nick Pope and Joelinton. They miss both of those a lot.

Eddie Howe still has plenty of credit in the bank. Whatever happens this season, whether they finish mid-table or qualify for Europe, Eddie Howe will be Newcastle's manager next season.

City didn't have to be at their best. Doku had a brilliant game, Foden was outstanding. City are just a machine, they've got so much quality in their squad.

So far it's all about the sky blue in the FA Cup semi-finals with Coventry and Manchester City the first teams to book their place. Who will be joining them tomorrow?

City are 38 games unbeaten here. When you are the opposing team coming here, you have to take. Isak had chances in both halves, nothing. Dan Burn gave up a chance to shoot. You have to take those half chances to get any chance of a result.

I think Man City had so much control. There's no fairytale here, Manchester City were so much better here. You have to take them chances when they come up and Newcastle weren't good enough today.

A dominant performance from Manchester City and you just feel they barely really got out of third gear here. Bernardo Silva's two deflected goals sealed the deal for the home side.

Another trip to Wembley on the cards for Pep Guardiola's side.

For Newcastle, it's a disappointing night as it means their hopes of winning any silverware this season are over.

That's that. Manchester City progress to the semi-final of the FA Cup for a record sixth consecutive campaign.

Coventry scored two goals in added time earlier today to beat Wolves and progress to the semi-final.

It doesn't feel like that is going to happen for Newcastle here.
