Govt releases Sh30.5bn for secondary school education capitation

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 27 – The government has released Sh30.5 billion for secondary school education capitation as well as loans and scholarships for university students.

In a statement, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu asserted that the funds will be received in schools before they close for the April Holidays which is slated for next week.

”The Government has released Sh30.5 billion to cover secondary school education capitation, and loans and scholarships for students in universities. Of the total amount, Sh7 billion will cater for capitation for public schools at the Junior Secondary School level while Sh16 Billion will cover capitation grants under the Free Day Secondary School Education Programme,” read the statement by Machogu.

He added that Sh794 billion of the amount will be used for loans towards the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) while Ksh3.98 billion will be disbursed for scholarships through the Universities Fund (UF).

In May last year, President William Ruto unveiled the new University Funding Model which he said was anchored on providing a level playing ground for all students in Kenya.

President Ruto observed at the time that it was the Government’s commitment to ensure all students are supported adequately in their education.

“No student will ever be left behind,” he said. The new funding model disburses funds on the ratio encompassing 61 percent of Government scholarships, 36 percent of Government loans, and 7 percent of households.
