Unattended cooking on a deck caused a housefire in Syracuse's Eastwood neighborhood Friday evening.

On Friday at approximately 7:38 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters responded to a home on South Edwards Avenue to find light smoke coming from the rear of the home.

Crews found a fire on the rear deck spreading into the one-and-a-half-story home. They stretched hoses to the rear of the home to extinguish the fire while other firefighters searched for any trapped occupants.

Searches were negative as all occupants escaped prior to the department's arrival.

Inside, firefighters found that the fire had spread to the interior walls and into the attic. They used tools to open holes in walls and ceilings to get water on the fire.

The fire spread was cut off and it was declared out after approximately 30 minutes. The exterior deck sustained moderate damage while the interior sustained fire, smoke and water damage.

Syracuse Fire investigators determined the fire was caused by unattended cooking on the deck.

Four occupants were displaced by the fire and were assisted by the Red Cross.
