CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. — Girls on the Run Capital Region is celebrating its tenth year of programming. Registration for the spring season is now open.

Girls on the Run is a national organization that helps girls in third through eighth grade to find joy, good health, and confidence through their experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running. Over the course of a ten-week program guided by trained volunteer coaches, participants develop and improve competence, feel confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care, create positive connections with peers and adults, and make a meaningful contribution to community and society.

Nearly 3,000 girls in the Albany area have participated so far. This year, Girls on the Run Capital Region is expanding to offer programming in Warren and Washington counties.

For this year’s spring season, Girls on the Run Capital Region will be offered at 34 locations and will culminate with a 5K event that brings together family, friends and community members to celebrate the girls’ growth throughout the season. With the support of Girls on the Run Capital Region’s presenting sponsor Highmark Blue Shield, the 5k will take place at the Joe Bruno Stadium, home of the Tri-City Valley Cats, on May 18. The program fee includes all program materials, registration for the end-of-season 5K event, an event t-shirt and more. Financial assistance is available to those who qualify.

“Our organization is stronger than ever as we enter this milestone year,” Girls on the Run Capital Region Council Director Sarah Smith Syden said in a news release. “Each time we expand our territory, we expand the impact that we have on girls throughout the Capital Region. From our spring season to the 5K celebration, and 10-year anniversary to the reinvention of our Sneaker Soiree – our staff, board members, coaches, volunteers and girls are looking forward to an exciting year!”

Coaches and race volunteers are always needed. For more information including participation opportunities, visit www.gotrcr.org.
