Fulton, Morrison split baseball/softball doubleheader

MORRISON, Ill. – The Morrison Mustangs played host to the Fulton Steamers in a baseball/softball doubleheader on Friday evening.

Steamers hold off Mustangs late rally for first victory of the season

Starting with softball, the offense got started very early on with a three run first inning. Although they gave up a run in the bottom half of the frame, they held that lead going into the third inning of play.

Madyson Luskey added an RBI before a wild throw by the Mustangs extended their lead to 5-1 in the third. Fulton was not done quite yet as Resse Germann smacked a two-run home run over the left field fence to make it a 7-1 game as the Steamers kept on rolling.

In the fourth that lead grew even further to 9-1 but Morrison came screaming back, plating four in the fourth and two in the sixth to pull within two, 9-7.

Addison Hartman was able to hold on for the Steamers and they secured the win and improved to 1-2 on the year. Germann led the day with five RBI’s for Fulton.

Mustangs late frame magic propels them past Steamers

For much of the game on Friday night, the Fulton Steamers were in complete control, plating three runs in the top of the first inning. Junior Jacob Huisenga drove in the first two before Jimmy Crimmins singled in the other for an early 3-0 lead.

Chase Dykstra was on the mound for Fulton, pitching a scoreless first before giving up three runs in a rocky second inning.

The Steamers got their three runs right back in the third with two coming off the bat of Kaden Wilkin. Morrison made it a two run game, 6-4 after scoring in the bottom of the third.

Huisenga plated two more runs top of the fourth, this time with a single up the middle making it 8-4.

Besides one Morrison run in the bottom of the fifth inning, it was a pretty quiet game up until the final frame.

In the bottom of the seventh each of the first two Mustangs struck out and their chance of a comeback looked slim. However, a couple of hits and a walk loaded the bases before they were able to clear them with a double and knot this game at eight.

Just when it looked like we were going to extra innings, an error on a dropped third strike allowed the Mustangs runner to cross the plate and give them the win 9-8.

Morrison opens the year 1-0 while the Steamers move to 0-3.
