MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Three men are wanted after they stole a woman's car while she was pumping gas at a South Memphis gas station in broad daylight, police said.

Memphis Police (MPD) said that the car theft happened just before 3:45 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2024, at the Shell gas station, located at 1890 South Third Street.

MPD released surveillance footage showing the a woman who was in the process of pumping gas when a man snatched her car keys from behind and got into her black 2017 BMW 320i.

Another man tried to get into the backseat but couldn't, police said.

MPD said that the car sped away while the two other men "quickly walked" away from the gas station.

As of March 21, 81 days into the year, 2,376 vehicles had been stolen across Memphis, according to police data. That's an average of 29 cars per day. 

That's number's actually significantly lower than the number of vehicles that had been stolen during the same time period last year. In 2023, between January 1 and March 21, 3,447 vehicles had been stolen. 

MPD continues to frequently hand out free steering wheel locks to help deter people from stealing cars. 

On March 20, MPD said that Memphis drivers could stop by the Traffic Division at 3430 Austin Peay Highway to pick up a free steering wheel lock while supplies last. You can check availability by calling the Traffic Division at 901-636-4679.
