Colusa High School honors 'Super Seven' academics

Mar. 26—Following a decades-long tradition, Colusa High School honored its top seven junior and senior students at Friendship Hall inside Trinity Methodist Church in Colusa on Monday for their outstanding academic achievements.

Known as the "Super Seven," these students have been recognized for their dedication to school and extracurricular activities every year since 1975. Parents are also honored for their support.

According to Sun-Herald archives, the Colusa Women's Club started the award dinner tradition in 1975 to encourage academic scholarship among the students in Colusa and the sorority took over organizing the event in 1998. In 2023, the Colusa Rotary Club became a sponsor for the awards. In previous years, the Torchbearer Gamma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority helped organize the Super Seven event for students and their families.

The 2024 Super Seven students honored for their academic achievements are: — Joscelyne Gonzalez Valdes, daughter of Maria Valdes. Her academic interests include math, English, science and Spanish. In her junior year, Gonzalez Valdes participated on the tennis and golf teams and yearbook. She is currently involved with the Future Business Leaders of America. In her free time, she enjoys reading, writing and playing tennis. After graduation, she plans to attend Butte College before transferring to a four year university to earn a degree in accounting. — Jacob "Jake" Sutton, son of Jennifer and Jeff Sutton. His primary academic interests include math and Colusa High School's Environmental Science Academy. He has enjoyed learning how to run a business while supporting his community and helping to improve Colusa High School as Associated Student Body president. Jacob Sutton is also involved with the golf and basketball teams. After high school, he plans on attending the University of Arizona to obtain a business degree. — Griselda Macias, daughter of Maria and Juan Macias. Her favorite subjects in school are science oriented, and she is involved with the Spanish club, the Environmental Science Academy and FFA. In her free time, Griselda Macias enjoys spending time with her friends and family, listening to music and going shopping. After graduation, she plans on becoming an ultrasound technician and traveling. — Grace Graybill, daughter of Maricela Verduzco and Joel Graybill. Her main interests in school are science and art, and her extracurricular activities include gymnastics, track, and tutoring. Grace Graybill currently works as a gymnastics coach at Riley's Gymnastics Academy in Yuba City. In her free time, she enjoys painting, camping, hiking and cooking. After high school, she plans on attending a four year university and majoring in kinesiology. — Jacob "Jake" Cerny, son of Mike and Cindy Cerny. He is primarily interested in science, physics, sports and math. Jacob Cerny has participated in cross country and track throughout high school. Outside of school, he enjoys hiking, playing video games, spending time with friends and watching movies. After graduating, he plans on pursuing a degree in math. — Seth Kalisuch, son of Pamela and Dak Kalisuch. His main academic interests include math and economics. Seth Kalisuch has played baseball and basketball throughout high school and is also involved with the Environmental Science Academy. In his free time, he enjoys watching sports and reading about his favorite teams. He also enjoys being outdoors. Kalisuch takes pride in being both a successful student and athlete. After high school, he plans to attend Grand Canyon University in Arizona to pursue a degree in sports and entertainment management. — Elouiza "Elle" Faris, daughter of Rob and Sheryl Faris. Her favorite subjects are physics, English, calculus and environmental science. Elouiza Faris is involved with several sports including cross country, volleyball and softball. She currently works as a lifeguard and volunteers for the Chico chapter of the Boys and Girls Club. Alongside her parents, Faris is thankful for the support from her grandparents. In her free time, she enjoys playing sports, reading, traveling and shopping. After graduation, she plans on attending a four-year university and studying physics.
