What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

HOUSING- Every PA resident deserves a safe, affordable home with easy access to the jobs, schools, services, transportation networks, and other amenities that shape their quality of life. Whether through new protections for renters, the development of new affordable housing projects, or the full-scale implementation of programs like Whole Homes Repair, this is the time to make a generation-defining investment in deeply affordable, green, and equitable housing

CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND SAFETY-Pennsylvania is a world leader in mass incarceration, whose incarceration rate exceeds those of every country in the world, including our own. It is past time to make Pennsylvania a leader in mass liberation, not mass incarceration by reducing

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

We must institute universal early voting, vote by mail, automatic voter registration of everyone of voting age and same day registration. Right now, Pennsylvania robs people who have been swept up by the mass incarceration system of the right to vote. This system disenfranchises countless voters who are primarily poor, Black, and brown. We must also do targeted outreach of Black, brown and immigrant communities year round so that our communities are not merely asked to vote but truly engaged in the process of governing ourselves.Partisan redistricting encourages cynicism about the electoral process, and reduces the need for parties to engage in outreach and organizing. future redistricting should take place under an independent commission.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

Raise new funding equitably to ensure every public school delivers a high standard of learning and supports students social, emotional, and material needs. Enact a fair share tax plan to raise additional money for schools through taxes that primarily impact wealthy individuals and profitable businesses, and put this new appropriation through the fair funding formula to ensure increased levels of support staff and lower class sizes in high-needs school districts.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

I have voted against Republican attempts to limit abortion, and I have spoken out against the funding of crisis pregnancy centers in every budget hearing. I have also consistently spoken out about book bans and curriculum distortions throughout the Commonwealth. I joined and promoted demonstrations in my district after the Dobbs decision came out in 2022. I was a leading elected official organizing the protests against the Moms for Liberty conference which took place in my district, publicly writing and speaking out against the institutions (such as the Museum of the American Revolution, for which I organized a letter of all the state officials representing the institution) that were hosting them for this event.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

The most pressing issues facing Pennsylvania but specifically Philadelphia are education and safety. I would successfully work across the aisle to find common sense solutions to drive desired outcomes and keep our communities safer while providing the best education possible for our children.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

It is not necessary to require ID to vote. In addition, I believe in having open dialogue to narrow down the needs, barriers, and concerns of ALL residents of the commonwealth.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

Abortion is healthcare and I strongly support keeping it not only legal but accessible.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

One pressing problem is bridging the political divide. We need reform in the legislative process by enabling a citizen commission to draw legislative districts not politicians. We don’t have enough skilled workers to replace retiring workers. I support increasing the availability of technical education. The cost and availability of healthcare especially mental health is a key issue. Hospitals face increasing costs in delivering quality care and workforce shortages. More government support is required. The opioid crisis must be addressed through more treatment and harm reduction. Affordable housing and emergency shelter is unattainable for too many people. We must incentivize more work force housing and neighborhood redevelopment.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

Voting is safe and secure in Pennsylvania, but more must be done to make voting more accessible and convenient. Act 77 which offered no excuse mail in ballots needs to be amended to fix and clarify some issues that have arisen since its passage. Actions I support include open primaries so all voters including those registered as independents could vote, streamlined mail in ballots that are easier to understand and complete, the creation of a permanent absentee/mail in ballot voter list, and more training and resources available to counties for election management. I also support expanded protection for election workers and administrators, stronger penalties for voter intimidation and deception and better guidelines on ballot drop boxes.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

The Basic Education Funding Commission (BEFC) made recommendations which I fully support including a continuous review of the funding formula to address changes that occur in school districts and impact their funding needs. This isn’t a once and done proposition; we must continue to make progress in bringing equity to education funding. The Commission also recommended that charter school funding, investing in the education workforce and school facility repairs must be finally addressed by the legislature. As a member of the legislature, I have supported these proposals. There are initiatives that were not addressed which I support such as school property tax reform and ideas on how school mergers may be encouraged in the Commonwealth.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

Abortion is safe and legal in Pennsylvania and must remain so. Sexual reproductive health is a private matter, and every woman must have the right to determine her own healthcare decisions, not politicians. However, there are restrictions that limit access and create unnecessary barriers to abortion in the Commonwealth. The 24-hour waiting period after a required counselling session necessitates at least two visits to a clinic which can be costly and difficult for many women and creates an unnecessary delay. In addition, abortions in Pennsylvania must be conducted by a physician. I support permitting qualified health care providers to also perform abortions.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

Polling shows that the top concern of Pennsylvanians is the economy. I support small businesses and our farming community. Removing unnecessary regulations and lowering high business taxes, would help existing businesses and encourage new ones. The higher cost of food and prescription drugs is a big issue for many families and individuals. I support the preservation of farmland and placing limits on the cost of pharmaceuticals. The biggest environmental issue is water pollution. Remediating acid mine drainage areas and using best management practices are a good start to water quality improvement.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

Election Integrity is very important. I would support voter ID and the use of paper ballots. Voter rolls should be kept up-to-date. Watchers should be able to actually see the ballots being counted. To expand access, I would support having election day a one day holiday.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

I would support legislation that allows for school choice, where the money follows the child to any type of school or homeschool of their choice.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

I support the right to life. Currently, abortions are permitted up until 23 weeks into the pregnancy. That’s almost 6 months. I believe we can do better than that. The 15 week heartbeat bill would be an improvement.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

Our biggest problem is politicians who have lost sight of what they are supposed to do-and are hurting all of us in the process. Whether it is increasing spending and driving inflation to record levels, pushing for radical policiea that increase eneegy costs and reduce public safety, or belittling the contribution of parents in education, too many politicians are following ideology that puts politics before people. I will combat all of this by bringing common sense back to state government, fighting for fiscal discipline, public safety, job creation, and improved educational opportunities for all.

Veteran Homelessness, Issues concerning PA’s Aging Elderly population and caregivers’ assistance; Education - Equity Funding and Liveable wages; and Environmental & Clean Energy Issues. Examine existing program funding of current budget; create new cash streams.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

Primary Elections and General Elections should be holidays, this would increase voter participation.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

That is currently being handled by the Courts, as a candidate, I have no firm opinion on corrective actions. However, the Court ruling is a great first step.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

It should be a private decision between the woman and her physician. Federal HIPPA policies regarding patient privacy should be applied in all medical decisions.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

It’s harder than ever for everyday people in Pennsylvania to get ahead. A hard day’s work should be enough to live on. Every child deserves a good education regardless of their ZIP code. Everyone in our community needs a safe home, but they’re getting harder to afford than ever. And with access to abortion under constant attack, we need leaders who will always defend a woman’s privacy and right to choose.

Since 2012, I’ve been fighting for all of these things in the State House, and in 2022 we succeeded in passing them from the lower chamber. Now I want to finish the fight by bringing these issues to the State Senate, and finally deliver a state government that works for all of us in Pennsylvania.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

We need to do everything we can to make our elections accessible to everyone who wants to participate. Automatic voter registration, robust access to early voting by mail and in-person, and making election day a national holiday are big steps we can take to make sure everyone gets a fair chance to make their voice heard in our democracy. I also support Governor Shapiro’s proposal to create an election security taskforce to detect and solve threats to the safety and security of our elections.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

I support full implementation of the fair funding formula. Every child in Pennsylvania deserves the best available education, regardless of their ZIP code.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

I will fight for abortion to remain safe and legal in Pennsylvania, and against any attempts to strip away our rights and privacy.

Nick DiFrancesco

Nick DiFrancesco

Nick DiFrancesco is running for Pennsylvania State Senate.Provided by the League of Women Voters

County: Dauphin

Occupation: Treasurer, Dauphin County

Education: Bachelor of Science in Public Service, The Pennsylvania State University

Qualifications: 30 years of experience in both formal and voluntary roles serving the people of the 15th Senate District. More than 20 years of public policy experience promoting local businesses, healthy communities, and the importance of emergency service providers.

Contact: http://difrancescoforsenate.com | facebook.com/nick.difrancesco.7

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

My reason for running for the state senate is rooted in a desire to improve the quality of our public school system and to ensure that every parent has a choice in where their child attends school, whether public or private. Another critical issue facing most households is inflation and the need to put an end to senseless spending and seemingly endless tax increases. We need to place strict limits on how, where, and why we are spending tax dollars. Of equal importance to education and the economy is the safety of our citizens. Providing adequate funding to our police and emergency service providers is a must, as is fighting to protect our Commonwealth from bad federal policies, including sanctuary cities, that threaten our citizens.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

As a former County Commissioner and member of the Dauphin County Election Board, I can say that access to voting precincts is convenient for most individuals. Our precinct partners provide a secure environment to ensure the fairness of elections, and I will work to make certain that these workers are respected and supported. As a Senator, I will respect the voice of local officials when making critical legislative decisions, and will be an advocate for the taxpayers while supporting safe and secure elections.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

Giving parents the right to choose the best school for their child’s education is essential. For the good of the student, we need to make certain that the restrictions we place on a student based on an address never limits their ability to succeed in life. As a Senator I will fight to ensure that every child has access to a great school.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

I support Pennsylvania’s current law and will focus my time in office on improving Pennsylvania’s public school system, strengthening our economy, and on ensuring the safety and security of our citizens.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

The primary role of government is the safety of our citizens. From highways to communities to fentanyl poisonings, action must be taken. In addition, too many veterans are in need of assistance and many are homeless. I will work for an increase in Veteran Service Officers at the County level.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

I would question the effectiveness of many of the recent changes which has resulted in Pennsylvanians losing trust in the system.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

There are hundreds if not thousands of people involved in formulating the appropriate legislative policy. I would like to consider their recommendations and decide which is best for my constituents.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

I support the Pennsylvania Abortion Control Act.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

Addressing Climate Change: I’m working to reduce harmful emissions, cut pollution, invest in clean energy, build a climate-resilient infrastructure, protect our air and water from dangerous contaminants, and support environmental justice communities.

Defending Reproductive Freedom: I’m dedicated to keeping abortion safe and legal in Pennsylvania and ensuring that reproductive healthcare, including quality maternal, prenatal, and perinatal care, is accessible to all individuals and families.

Supporting Public Education: I support investments in all levels of public education, including historic investments in basic education to meet recommendations of the Basic Education Funding Commission (BEFC).

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

I support legislation to open primary elections to all voters, including the 1.2 million Pennsylvanians who are not registered with a political party.

I support free, safe, and fair elections, including defending vote-by-mail and access to mail-in ballot dropboxes, as well as protecting private voter information.

We have taken steps to expand access to voting, including online registration and automatic voter registration. And I will continue to work to keep voting accessible for all eligible voters, including removing unnecessary barriers to voting and opposing measures designed to suppress voters.

I also support investments in protecting election workers and poll workers and introduced a bill to update the poll worker oath.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

I support the Governor’s proposed investment of $1.1 billion in new funding to address the landmark Fair Funding decision in the 2024-25 state budget. That includes more funding for early childhood education and special education, as well as nearly $900 million to be distributed in a new adequacy formula as recommended by the BEFC.

I also support key investments in building a strong pipeline of teachers and childcare workers, including increasing student-teacher stipends, establishing a Grow-Your-Own educators program, and helping recruit educators by covering tuition, fees, supplies, or other costs related to teacher training.

I will also continue to oppose measures that divert precious funding and resources from our public schools.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

It’s been two years since a divided Supreme Court made the extreme decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Tens of millions of women now live in states with dangerous abortion bans. We continue to face a concerted and well-organized campaign to erode access to reproductive freedom and healthcare in the Commonwealth and across the nation.

I will keep fighting to keep abortion safe and legal in Pennsylvania. I support legislation to protect and expand access to contraceptives, remove targeted restrictions and mandates on abortion providers, and codify into state law the personal right to make decisions about health and reproduction, including abortion.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

Pennsylvania has long been a reactive state - we wait until there is a problem & then spend years trying to fix it. As a borough councilperson, I see firsthand how difficult it is to maintain services in your municipality. The rapidly increasing cost of Fire, Police, & Ambulances has seen many good departments close their doors. Right now, PA’s legislature is one of the most expensive & least productive in the country. We need to move forward & ensure that the government starts working on providing these basic services, as well as school & infrastructure, to provide our communities with safe environments that they can grow & succeed in. I believe a start would be reforming the grant process to one that rotates awards based on needs.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

Elections need to be safe, secure, and accessible. The state legislature needs to ensure that everyone who can vote has access to voting and that we can all be confident in the results of the election. I believe this needs to be a bipartisan approach that looks at options such as early in-person voting, automatic voter registration, and free and available voter verification. What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

Funding for education has been a long running issue in the state. It’s time that we step up and make sure that we adequately fund our schools, but also use this as an opportunity to help reduce or eliminate property taxes. I believe that zip code should not determine success, and that our public school system needs to work for all students. I believe that a variety of funding sources could be used to help fund our schools in a more equitable way and take the pressure of overtaxed property owners, especially seniors.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

Reproductive freedom is one of the most important and personal issues that we face in recent times. Many women face very difficult decisions when it comes to their health and well-being and we should strive to make sure those decisions are between them and their healthcare providers.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

For me, fighting blight and revitalizing our downtowns and older industrial neighborhoods in Carbon, Luzerne, and Schuylkill counties is a high priority, as is finding a fairer way to fund our public schools. My goal is to further improve the education of all Pennsylvania students, from pre-school to graduate school, in our smallest towns and villages to our largest cities, for generations to come.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

Ensuring our elections are accessible and secure is vital. I would support any measure that boosts election security and supports our county and local election boards. Voter ID is a high priority for the people I represent.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

The Commonwealth Court has spoken, and I agree that we must find a fairer way to fund our public schools. The key here is developing legislation that allows us to invest in our most valuable resource, our students, but also avoids massive tax burdens on Pennsylvanians.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

Pennsylvania’s voters should be the ones deciding whether taxpayers should be required to pay for abortions—not the courts, not the governor, not the legislature.

Contact: temonsforpa.com | www.instagram.com/TemonsforPA | facebook.com/TemonsforPA

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

There is wide consensus across party lines in our communities. Pennsylvanians want good schools, good jobs, affordable healthcare, safe access to reproductive healthcare, clean air and water, and to own homes we can afford to live in through retirement. We can make all that happen this year in the PA State Senate. We have legislation to fund public education, create good-paying union jobs, protect women’s rights over their own bodies, and invest our tax dollars back into our homes and neighborhoods. Our race in the 31st district will decide if we pass that legislation. As a building designer who has specialized in making homes energy-efficient and accessible for older Pennsylvanians, I am excited to help build a PA that works for all of us.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

State, federal, and local governments run overwhelmingly free and fair elections in this country. Our votes matter. Contrary to any claims of widespread voter fraud, the real danger now in PA is having our votes discounted on technicalities in the name of election security. We need more of us involved in our electoral processes; some parts of PA still don’t have 50% turnout. Mail voting (done successfully across the country for decades) can be fantastic and is more convenient, informed, and safe for many voters. Bar codes on mail ballots make the process automated and secure. We need legislative clarity to make sure these votes are counted. Currently, unique to PA, a portion of mail ballots are discounted for minor user errors every year.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

A decade ago, the PA General Assembly established a formula to fund schools fairly across the commonwealth, but its application was severely limited. The legislature instead enacted deep cuts to education, and our state government now contributes less (38%) to our public schools than almost any other state (47% average). This means PA schools rely more heavily on property taxes than anywhere else in the country. We need to pass fair funding, offset losses where necessary, reform vouchers that cost school districts millions, hire and pay good teachers, and invest in full-day kindergarten and after school programs, and all of that investment will also amount to tax relief for homeowners in PA. Everyone benefits when the state pays its share.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

I unequivocally support women’s reproductive rights and autonomy over their own bodies. In the past few years, the PA General Assembly has introduced legislation that is dangerous and puts at risk the life of anyone who might get pregnant in this state–extreme legislation that can affect critical treatment for complications during pregnancy or even fertility choices made between parents and doctors. In light of these recent attempts in Pennsylvania and ongoing attempts in parts of this country to limit reproductive rights and access to critical healthcare, I think it’s appropriate to introduce, and I would support legislation that guarantees a woman’s right to choose without government intervention in Pennsylvania.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

  • Government Growth - adopt a constitutional amendment that prohibits state government budget increase, is greater than the rate of inflation. Require the removal of two regulations for each newly adopted regulation.
  • Election Integrity - consolidate the state election code, codify systems of internal controls, clean up the voter rolls. by clarifying the process in statute, dictate in statute consequences for government actors violation of election law.
  • Assure tax dollars are not used for the termination of life. Do not allow the termination of a fetus after 18 weeks.Unfair Education Spending: divide the money appropriated for education into vouchers for each student to choose an education that best fits their specific needs

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

consolidate Pennsylvania’s election code which currently exists in various sections of state law, and contradicts language in the varying sections. establish clear the role maintenance requirements in statute and require counties to clean up voter rolls without state interference., Implement very specific systems of internal controls through statute to provide full accountability, transparency and the ability to audit, require voter ID each time a person votes, Require all ballots to be canvassed at their corresponding precinct so voters who change their minds and wish to vote in person, or who never received their ballot are not disenfranchised, codify consequences for government agents who knowingly violate election law as written.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

Eliminate antiquated, hold harmless laws. Fund students NOT systems. Create a new funding formula that divides education funding dollars by the number of pupils with multipliers for cost of living, disabilities, and poverty.

Eliminate administrative bloat in schools,

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

Assure tax dollars are not used for the termination of life. Do not allow the termination of a fetus after 18 weeks.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

The most pressing issue facing Pennsylvanian’s is the massive educational funding gap. As the landmark Fair Funding court case has shown, there is still much more work to be done in providing every Pennsylvanian child with a high-quality education; no one should have their educational opportunity determined by zip code.

We must fully fund Pre-K - 12th public education and give every Pennsylvanian child the tools they need for a happy, successful life. No school in our Commonwealth should have mold, lead, or the lack of resources to remediate these problems. Every Pennsylvanian should have the opportunity for an affordable post-secondary education, whether that is vocational school or college.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

Your right to vote is sacred and we must never allow state officials or legislatures to overturn election results because they do not like them. I will fight every effort to repeal mail-in voting, reduce access to drop boxes, or hinder your constitutional right to vote in any way.

Counties will receive the resources that they need to run efficient, free and fair elections including giving clear guidance and support from the Department of State for curing ballots with mismatching signatures or voter information.

We must get big money out of politics once and for all. Pennsylvania must no longer be regarded as the “wild west” of campaign finance and must enact publicly funded campaigns and strict limits on big-dollar donations.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

We must fully fund Pennsylvania’s public schools.

The legislature should immediately convene a commission to study and propose funding recommendations to close the funding gap.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

Pennsylvania’s abortion laws should remain the same.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

Access to Health Care & Reproductive Freedom: I would address these issues by supporting measures to ensure access to affordable, quality healthcare and mental health care.

The Economy: I would take a number of measures to help those who are struggling to make ends meet, including addressing the rising cost of living by raising the minimum wage, strengthening prevailing wage protections, and protecting workers rights (strengthening unions, paid sick and family leave and public sector OSHA).

Public Education: I would push for full and fair funding of public schools, raising educators and education support staff minimum wage, fight vouchers and oppose state funding of failing/unaccountable private charter schools.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

Ensuring that democracy is open to all in Pennsylvania is incredibly important to me. I support open primaries, same-day registration, better funded County Elections Departments, permitting pre-canvassing and protecting mail-in-ballots.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

As a career public educator from a family of public educators, I am uniquely positioned to advance policies that ensure full and fair funding for public schools. I would oppose vouchers and support policies that prohibit the expansion of cyber charter schools. I would also support policies that ensure that charter schools need to be held to the same standards as traditional, brick and mortar public schools. I would also support the use of tax dollars to fund public schools.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

A woman’s healthcare choices should be between her and her doctor – bottom line. That’s why I support policies that would ensure comprehensive access to reproductive healthcare services, including expanding access to contraception, abortion services, and maternal health resources. In addition, I would support removing the onerous hurdles that the Abortion Control Act puts on access to abortions.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

On a macro-level, Pennsylvania faces the challenges of many mid-Atlantic states: population stagnation, a flat economy for the vital manufacturing sector, and a general loss of confidence in government’s capacity to address these issues. We still lose too many of our youth to sunbelt states because of an insufficient number of opportunities for meaningful careers. Addressing these issues will require a concerted focus by Pennsylvania’s leaders, including a commitment to economic development that has been hit-or-miss because of special interest agendas. We must embrace our energy sector and encourage new businesses by establishing consistent policies when it comes to regulation and taxation.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

Pennsylvania has detailed and workable election laws and regulations. The problem has been bureaucrats at the state level who treat clearly written laws as mere advisories. From disregarding the law governing mail-in ballots to failing to advertise Constitutional Amendments in order to get them on the ballot, Pennsylvania has been ill-served by the office of Secretary of the Commonwealth. Simply put, we have the laws in place. We have only to honor them.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

Pennsylvania already is among the highest spending states, per pupil, when it comes to educational subsidy. The inequity exists at the local level, where property taxes -- mostly on homeowners – provide the difference when it comes to school funding. We must find a proper way to equalize funding without causing tremendous increases in taxes on homeowners. I remain committed to seeing that the working families of the 37th District are not taxed out of their homes because of Harrisburg’s failure to meet funding obligations.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

I see no pressing need to change current laws governing abortion in Pennsylvania. Our priority should be to support women across Pennsylvania, not change settled law. Protecting women means supporting compassionate exceptions for abortions like in the cases of rape, incest, and protecting the life of the mother. Protecting women means defending the decision to use IVF as a means of family planning with no political strings attached. Elected officials must always remember the important core responsibilities of governing, protecting the people you serve, leading by example, and following the law, and in this case that means not overstepping into the relationship between a woman and her doctor.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

I believe that adequately and equitably funded schools are the most important issue we are looking at now in the state legislature. The courts ruled that our current system is unconstitutionally unfair and we have to fix it soon. We owe high quality schools filled with well-paid teachers to every child in this state, regardless of where they’re born.

I also believe national attacks on reproductive freedom are a major concern, and we as a state need to remain a bulwark against abortion bans.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

I believe that we should have same day registration so that folks can decide to participate in our elections with no hurdles. I’d like to see more funding to counties to better compensate poll workers, which will also allow us to recruit more people into that important role. I want counties to be permitted, clearly and legally, to pre canvass ballots and remedy simple errors - like a wrong date or missing signature. No one should be silenced on a technicality.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

I support the recommendations of the commission, and I stand firmly against siphoning off public education dollars to private schools through voucher programs that fund unaccountable (and many unsuccessful) private schools.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

I believe that the Abortion Control Act provides the right to abortion very clearly, but there are some adjustments that can make abortion more accessible - like the reduction of some administrative hurdles to care, and expanding the ability to practice abortion care beyond just physicians.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

The most pressing issues I see Pennsylvanians facing include climate and environmental justice concerns, disparities in our public education system, affordable housing, accessing quality mental and physical health services especially for those on assistance, economic inequality, protecting abortion and reproductive rights, and disability justice.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

I support moves taken by Governor Shapiro recently on automatic voter registration as well as Allegheny County adding ballot drop off locations. I would also advocate for same day voter registration, preventing voter ID requirements, and protecting mail in ballot voting. Additionally, I would like to see the restoration of voting rights to those released from prison and even expanding voting rights where possible to more of those within prison.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

It has been clear long before this court ruling that our communities of color have suffered the most from the critical underfunding of our public education system in PA. This court ruling gives us an unprecedented opportunity to correct this imbalance, but we cannot be satisfied with simply increasing funding, we must seek to ensure we center the communities that have been disproportionately affected by the lack of funding and have been locked into underfunded school districts by racist red-lining policies. It is not enough to bring more funding into the system, we also must address the current allocation issues and change that so as we bring in more funding we ensure we don’t make the same mistakes.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

We must work quickly to codify and enshrine abortion rights here in PA. Abortion is healthcare, and a lack of access to abortion will only lead to unnecessary deaths as a result from unsafe abortions being performed. These deaths have also been shown to disproportionately affect rural communities and communities of color, where maternal mortality rates are already too high. The same protections should be applied in any attempts to restrict abortion access in the future. Things like mandatory waiting periods, unnecessary regulations on providers, or bans on certain types of procedures or medications only serve to harm our most vulnerable populations across the commonwealth.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

Education is critical and my top priority. Our state is in the bottom quarter when it comes to per-student funding, and we pass the buck to local school boards who are forced to make up the difference. This has become such a big problem that Pennsylvania’s court system has ordered a systemic evaluation of our public school system and determined that we chronically underfund our schools. In addition, I will continue to advocate for policies that result in fully funded schools, safe communities, and economic investments in Allegheny County.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

There are a variety of opportunities to improve election administration and to promote greater voter participation, including continuing efforts to expand early and mail-in voting, expanding ballot dropboxes, allowing for pre-canvassing efforts, and same-day voter registration. I have been supportive of omnibus legislation in Harrisburg that would modernize PA’s election code to make elections secure while ensuring that the right to vote is highly accessible to everyone.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

The first measure that must be taken is to increase the portion of funding that comes from the state–no matter how evenly distributed, if we are funding school districts at a level that means only the wealthiest districts can meet their needs using their own tax bases, that cannot be equitable. This increased funding needs to be distributed using a fair and transparent formula that takes into account the real cost of educating students across districts, as well as the individual needs of different districts, including English language learners, children with disabilities and other needs, and students in poverty. No matter how we build that system, no district should suffer or lose needed funding while we build a future system fairer to all.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

Abortion should be a safe, legal, and accessible choice in Pennsylvania. We need to do more to protect that choice, especially following the Dobbs decision.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

Among the many issues facing Pennsylvanians, I’d like to highlight three: defending democracy, respecting workers, and fairly and fully funding education. I will oppose all voter suppression and hold those who undermine our democracy accountable. As a union leader who was raised by a working single mother, I know how important it is to ensure worker safety, guarantee higher wages, and defend the right to unionize. And as a teacher and a parent, I know the real costs – and life-changing benefits – of education. School funding for pre-K through high school sets the path for success, and access to higher education -in all its forms- strengthens our workforce, and builds a stronger economy and a healthier community.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

Democracy and access to the ballot remain under constant attack from members of one political party and the interest groups that support them. The legislature must do more to protect voting rights. Automatic voter registration and same-day registration are important first steps. The Commonwealth must also do more to expand mail ballot access by eliminating the annual mail ballot application and providing additional incentives for counties that provide multiple dropbox points throughout their communities. Furthermore, Pennsylvania should pass a constitutional amendment to enshrine into law the will of the voters by guaranteeing that the legislature must certify the outcome of our elections as voted by the people of the Commonwealth.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

Our public schools are currently funded at 12-15% below the national average. We can’t expect to develop homegrown talent in business, innovation, or the vocational trades if we do not first invest in their future. PA has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reform its funding model. These reforms must include 1. expanded access to free and low-cost childcare and pre-K, 2. charter school funding reforms that use the same formula set for the distribution of funds by public schools instead of using public schools as a pass-through for taxpayer dollars to fund under-regulated charter schools with little accountability, & 3. funding that equitably funds both rural and urban schools, which each suffer uniquely from a dearth of property taxes.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

While abortion remains legal in Pennsylvania, access to care is both insecure and restricted. I support a constitutional amendment that enshrines the right to abortion care into Pennsylvania law, protecting access no matter the party in power. With regard to the current laws, I support the elimination of unnecessary barriers to care enacted by politicians in the name of women’s health including elimination of the mandatory waiting period for care following state-mandated counseling designed to discourage patients from obtaining an abortion. And – I can’t believe it needs to be said in 2024 – I wholeheartedly support the use and legal protection of in vitro fertilization services to begin a family.

What do you see as the most pressing issues facing Pennsylvanians, and how would you address them?

The most pressing issues in Pennsylvania are equitable education funding, healthcare accessibility, and economic development. I plan to address these by advocating for reforms that ensure fair distribution of resources to all public schools, thereby leveling the playing field for every child regardless of their zip code. I aim to expand access to affordable care in healthcare, emphasizing mental health services and protections for pre-existing conditions. Economically, I will focus on job creation in sustainable industries, supporting small businesses, and fostering innovation to keep jobs in Pennsylvania. My approach combines legislative action with community engagement to create inclusive, comprehensive solutions.

What changes would you support making to Pennsylvania’s voting laws to expand access, ensure security, and support local election officials and processes?

I strongly support expanding early voting, streamlining mail-in ballots, and modernizing voter registration procedures through automatic and online options. Protecting voters’ rights, providing election officials with the necessary resources, and securing our voting systems are crucial. Making Election Day a state holiday will encourage more people to participate in the democratic process. These steps are essential for ensuring a robust and accessible democracy. These measures are also essential in making voting more accessible and secure, reflecting our commitment to a democratic process that respects and amplifies every Pennsylvanian’s voice.

What legislation would you support to comply with the Commonwealth Court’s ruling that Pennsylvania’s school funding system is unconstitutional and must be reformed?

Addressing the Commonwealth Court’s ruling on school funding, I would support legislation that establishes a new funding formula, increases state funding, ensures adequate and equitable funding, establishes minimum standards, creates an oversight body, and invests in infrastructure and technology. This approach would provide immediate action to increase funding while addressing long-term inequities in the school funding system.

What changes, if any, would you support making to Pennsylvania’s abortion laws?

Women’s reproductive health is fundamental. I will work to protect and expand access to reproductive healthcare by opposing unnecessary restrictions that threaten women’s health and independence. I will also work to enhance comprehensive healthcare services that support women’s health, including access to contraception. This includes expanding Medicaid coverage, increasing funding and support for clinics, promoting telehealth services, reducing legal barriers, protecting patient and provider privacy, and launching public education campaigns.

I believe that these steps will make abortion more accessible and affordable for all Pennsylvanians and will help to ensure that all women can make informed decisions about their reproductive health.
