INDIANAPOLIS — Police are investigating after one person was killed and five others, including an IMPD officer, were injured in a shooting early Sunday morning on the east side of Indianapolis.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, just after 1:30 a.m., officers responded to the 9400 block of East Washington Street on the report of shots fired. When officers arrived, they located four men and a woman with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.

Police said officers provided medical treatment to the victims and the officer until medics arrived on the scene.

The officer and four other victims were transported to an area hospital in stable condition. IMPD provided the ages of the four civilians:

  • 42-year-old man
  • 45-year-old man
  • 45-year-old man
  • 33-year-old woman

Investigators said two officers were working off-duty employment in full uniform when a disturbance took place in the parking lot of a nearby bar. At some point, gunfire was exchanged between the officers and at least one suspect.

Then, around 1:50 a.m., a man arrived at a local hospital with gunshot wounds. Detectives said he died from his injuries.

“We’re sorry that someone lost their life tonight. I’m also very happy that our officers did not sustain any serious injuries. Although, we do know that there is a long road ahead for him as he deals with the emotional impact of this situation,” IMPD Chief Chris Bailey said. “I’m proud of our response.”

Investigators said they did find a handgun at the scene.

Both officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for officers involved in a shooting investigation.

In a post on IMPD’s Facebook page, Chief Christopher Bailey released a statement on the Washington Street incident.

Early this morning, I responded to an unnecessary and chaotic incident, where one of our officers was wounded by gunfire. I’m relieved to report that the officer is on the mend and in high spirits. He is ready to get home to his family and get back to serving our community as soon as he is able.

I am proud of the courage and bravery both officers displayed during this incident. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks our law enforcement officers face each day while working to keep our community safe.

I extend my deepest gratitude to all who responded to the scene to help during this critical incident, as well as to all the IMPD officers who are back at work today protecting and serving.

Please keep our officer, his family, our department, and all those who were impacted by this senseless violence in your thoughts.

In the coming days, weeks, and months, I ask that you stand by our officers and professional staff, offering support and encouragement during this challenging time.

IMPD Chief Christopher Bailey

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett also put out a statement on the Washington Street shooting, noting that he is committed to making local neighborhoods safer.

Every day, IMPD officers put their safety on the line to serve our community and last night was no exception. Praying for our injured officer and all those impacted by last night’s incident. We remain committed to continuing to improve the safety of our neighborhoods.
