CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — A woman is now in custody in connection with a state DOH worker being hit by a car Thursday in Harrison County.
According to Clarksburg Police, Kiley Wagner, of Bridgeport, has been charged with DUI causing serious injury. It’s alleged that she struck an employee of the West Virginia Division of Highways, who is hospitalized in critical condition.
According to the DOH, the worker was part of a crew helping to set up traffic control apparatus on U.S. Route 50 in Clarksburg. The motorist struck the worker who was wearing fully reflective gear and a hard had with bright lights around 9:45 p.m. Officials say the construction zone was illuminated by flashing lights and the workers’ truck also had a flashing arrow sign to get the attention of drivers.
The victim suffered a severe head and shoulder injury and is hospitalized at Morgantown’s Ruby Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
Transportation Secretary Jimmy Wriston said the most important safety component in the state’s work zones is the person behind the wheel.
“There would be far fewer accidents if drivers would pay attention and obey the law in work zones,” Wriston said. “That’s what keeps you safe and it’s what keeps our workers safe.
“Please, hear this: Obey the law in work zones,” Wriston said.
