SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The community is mourning the loss of a child who was taken too soon, at the hands of the person who brought her into this world.

Family and friends will pay respect for Nefertiti Harris at the area where her body was found off Salt Springs Road.

The vigil will be held this evening, March 28.

Syracuse Police say the child’s mother, 29-year-old Latasha Mott, told them she had beaten her child with a belt in the shower.

She was killed in January, but her remains weren’t found until March 26.

According to the Onondaga County medical examiner, the five-year-old was beaten to death.
